Staying at a luxury hotel for 3 days this week. Has anyone ever tested the pool water at the hotel? This place has an indoor pool and spa. I'm not going to test it, but my wife thinks it's funny that I would even think of it. I mean, who doesn't like testing water? It's fun and sort of calming to perform the tests, so wouldn't it be funny to take my K2006 to the hotel? I mean, I'd really like to know FC before jumping in. :)

You can usually tell simply by the look of the water. Either the water will be crystal clear and look good or it will be cloudy and you cannot see your feet. At a hotel if the pool or spa water chemistry is not good the water will go cloudy rapidly.

Most areas have regulations for commercial pool water chemistry and a luxury hotel will keep the water within the required parameters. More often you will find the pool closed if anything is questionable.

Where you find sketchy water chemistry is at home rentals. I have checked water chemistry at homes I have rented and called the owner or rental agent with my findings. Inevitably they s y they have a weekly pool service for the pool and I tell them the service is not doing their job and get them out here ASAP. I then talk to the guy who arrives and once he sees I know what I am talking about he adjusts the pH, chlorine and sometimes CYA as needed.

Saw an indoor pool where you could not see your feet while standing in the 3' end  AND people were letting their kids swim in it even though they could see them when they went under the water!!! YEAH NO! I went to the front desk and told them they HAD to close the pool due to safety concerns...................Oh yeah our pool guy said the same thing but I forgot to lock the doors and put up the signs...................sigh...............he got the signs and keys to close it. There were some upset families but at least they lived through the day!

Now that we have our own pool - I will rarely use the hotel or (especially) the cruise ship pools while travelling, unless the pool is something really special (ie particularly large or with big slides / lazy river).

The last Embassy Suites we stayed at had pretty iffy-looking indoor pool water, but most other hotel/cruise ship pools we've seen looked fine visually (albeit too crowded).

My wife and I went down to Playa Del Carmen, Cancun, Mexico for week. The outdoor pool looked clear, I saw the pool man each morning vacuuming and leaf raking it. I did not see him check chems but he was able to go of view.

We used the pool but I asked my wife not to do any diving or putting her head in the water. So no water up our noses, in our ears or mouth. We’d shower when we got back to our room. No issues…

Update, I forgot to pack the kit. Dang it. I would have done it too, because we were staying at a resort off-season, meaning, there were hardly more than a few people even at this hotel, much less any of them using the pool. We never ended up getting in the pool or the hot tub. Pool water was clear as can be, but something about it just gave me the heebie jeebies.

We stayed there this summer (Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera) and had the same experience. I watched them vacuum, skim, and leaf rake all of the pools every morning. I never saw them checking chemicals, or adding any, but they do go into the equipment rooms. The pools were very clear. We all swam in them, and we did go under water in limited amounts, but as you did, kept water out of our noses and mouths.

Never took a test kit, but when we were in a hotel in Savannah GA in September they had their latest pool inspection report posted on wall by the door to the outdoor pool. My wife and I were walking out to the pool when she "lost" me. She came back in to find out what I was doing. "Reading the pool inspectors report of course" was my reply.
