Ants in my brush pole

Ants keep establishing themselves a home in my brush pole. They seem to be carpenter ants and they they come out en masse when you use the brush, which is fun for neither swimmers or the cleaner (and probably not for the ants, either).

I've tried using ant bait and other pesticides and it works for a while, but the come back.

The pole is one of the standard telescoping aluminum ones. It's hung on the fence when not in use.

Anyone had similar issues and found a solution?

Kill the ants and try cleaning/flushing the inside of the pole with ammonia and then PineSol. Ants leave pheromone trails behind that lead other ants along even after you have killed them.
