I joined summer before last and you guys taught me so much about pool chemistry and once I fixed my problem it was smooth sailing. I didn’t bother with the pool last year at all and my pump did set up and probably got some nasties inside of it but I have backwashed it a few times this year until the water runs clear.
Yet the pool I put up this year is still cloudy. Over the last week or two I was adding chlorine when it appeared cloudy because it tested zero and it would improve although the chlorine would be gone again by the next day. When my chlorine tested zero again last night, I added chlorine as normal and now the water is even more cloudy. I know I need a little CYA but otherwise I’m not terribly out of balance.
I thought about the slam method but the free chlorine is one which is technically within range so I figured that’s not what I need

Any ideas?

Cloudy water and high chlorine demand are almost always a sign of algae. What type of a test kit are you using? I think it's time to either dump and start over or SLAM.

My free chlorine is one and my combined chlorine is .5. I thought that was considered normal range.
I’m using the big test kit that I bought from this site.
Dumping the water is not an option, I literally haven’t even paid the $100 water bill from where I filled the pool less than two weeks ago lol
As I mentioned my pump did set up last year with no pool, but I drained the water out of it, although I’m sure it’s still got algae in it from moist to sand.
But I’ve backwashed it a few times and the water is now running clear. I can’t help wondering if I’m still getting algae coming in from the pump and if I should replace the sand. The sand is only two years old and I thought that wasn’t necessary
Would the slam method clean the filter media as well?

Can you post a full set of test results. How much is your FC dropping overnight? Make sure you continue to backwash your filter when pressure increases by 25% over clean pressure.

OK I will retest everything when I get home. May be tomorrow though.
I’ve been backwashing about once every two days because even though this filter has only been used for two seasons, I don’t think the pressure gauge has ever worked. It stays on five regardless.

OK so my last chlorine addition yesterday evening bumped me a little over and at 10 PM the chlorine was 13 PPM. At sunrise it had only dropped to 11 ppm. I feel like if this cloudy water was from algae, it would’ve used much more chlorine overnight.

How often are you testing and replacing FC? Are you brushing everything?
Every 2 hours. Except when im sleeping of course.
I haven’t seen anything to brush or vacuum to be honest. Normally when I have algae I can see the color, green or brown whatever. This time it’s just cloudy white

What products did you add to the pool this year?
Well I didn’t fill the pool until late in the year so it hasn’t even been a month.
I added some CYA but not enough to get my levels where they needed to be.
The testing also told me I needed to add baking soda and against my better judgment I added about half of what was recommended. I say against my better judgment because it has made my water cloudy in the past. But it did not get cloudy till a good bit after adding it so I can’t blame it on that.
Then just chlorine.
I wondered if my pump was spewing gunk back into the pool after it had set up, but as much chlorine has been pumped through it surely the sand is sparkly clean again. Besides it was about two weeks in before the cloudiness started showing up. At first adding some chlorine would get rid of it, not anymore

Then keep going. Sand filters take the longest to clear, and Intex filters are typically undersized...just will take a while.

A loss of 2 ppm overnight indicates you're still battling some organics in addition to slow filtering. Stay on course!

What kind of chlorine?

Ugh… thanks. Sure was hoping to have the pool open for the 4th but since it hasnt changed much in 9 days, I dont have alot of hope :(

As for the intex pump, mine is actually listed as “too big” for my pool size, so I figure Im good.
