Alkalinity & Other Concerns

Hello

i have currently a new pebble pool built in May. Pool is 12k gallons salt water Pool (32x16 free form) and I decided to do my own maintenance. I have got my own Taylor kit (k-2006) and been testing the water everyday (Mostly PH & Chlorine). As ive read from TFP and other posts, new construction pools will rise PH like crazy due to plaster curing, salt cell etc.. pool has been crystal clear since day 1. Pool builder did all the normal start up procedures (no salt first 30 days, no heater on etc..), i did the brushing twice a day for a month or so.

Current pool levels are as follow:
FC: 2.6 (it fluctuates but i tend to keep it under 3)
CYA: 35 (altough i got it tested at a local place last week and it showed 50 but im not trusting their numbers)
PH: 7.6 (it fluctuates but i try to keep it under 7.8)
Alkalinity: 70-80
CH: 370-380 (i've noticed today that it went up over the past week from 350, not sure why, i havent added any)

I think for the most part i have kept the water balance (or at least i think i have), however, i'm getting a little concerned with the amount of acid ive been adding lately, almost 12-16oz everyday to keep ph at normal levels. My concern is that Alkalinity doesnt seem to go down at all. When pool builder first added Alkalinity it was around 110 but i figured it would go down as i was adding acid, which it it did until it hit the 70-80 mark. For the past 2 weeks, ive been adding acid at the suggested amount per the TFP app ( and Taylor kit book) and for some reason, the alkalinity doesnt seem to drop at all. At first, I thought my kit had gone bad but i went to get the water tested a local place and it showed 85, so right around what ive been getting at. So what gives? i had to hope to hit 50-60 for alkalinity so PH wouldnt rise so often.

On a different not, the past few days, i started to notice scale/calcium build up on the waterline tile, any idea why this is? i thought calcium was good based on the TFP guidelines same with PH ( which i thought would be the main reason for this)

If it helps for additional information, I do have a heater, solar cover (which i reel out every day and reel it back in at night), Pump running 24/7, which i have it schedule for 16hrs low speed (800RPM), salt cell seems (have it set at 15%) to be generating salt or at least that's what the machine says and 8 hrs at higher Speed (2500RPM) mainly for the heater to work.

looking forward to hear all inputs

Welcome to TFP.

Your CYA is 40, we round up.

With a CYA of 40 your target FC is 3-7 and a minimum of 2. I would be running the FC around 5. You are flirting with and algae problem with any small hiccup of your SWG.

With a SWG you should have CYA of 50 to 60 to not need to run your SWG as hard.

Your TA will come down in time. If you want top smash it down you need to lower your PH to around 7.2.

What is the pH, TA, and CH of your fill water?

Do you have an autofill?

Waterline scale comes from evaporation leaving calcium and other minerals in your water on the tile..

I have not tested my fill water. Didn't think this would be an issue since I haven't had to add water since fill day (over a month or so ago).

I do not have an autofill.

Is it safe to assume the results from Taylor kit (30-35) are to be more accurate than the store (50)? I'm afraid of messing up with CYA and creating more issues since this is my first pool and still learning the ropes.
I have seen the chlorine be as high in the 3-4s but I didn't feel very comfortable with it, came out smelling chlorine one time and tested combined chlorine and it was less than 0.2 so I wasn't sure why the smell.

I'm really muffled with alkalinity, I would think that after adding about a gallon of muriatic acid over the course of a month that alkalinity would drop quite a bit but to remain the same is surprising.

Is having to add acid daily safe?

thank you for the link, I will certainly like to learn more about waterline scaling.

Trust your testing. It is more accurate then a Pool store.

Try adding acid every 2nd or 3rd day only when your pH rises above 8. Then lower it to around 7.6.
