In the last 6 weeks or so when I test my alkalinity, the water turns red and then bleaches out immediately. I have to add several more drops of R-009 until it stays red. I’m wondering why it happens and at what point to calculate the amount. As soon as the sample turns red or when it stays red?

You should continue to add R-009 until the color is red. After it turns red, continue to add drops until the color of the red does not change, then subtract the last drop from your drop count.
Wipe the R-009 tip with a wet paper towel before using it, this will remove any static that will make drops smaller.

Thanks for your help. I overlooked the extended test instructions when I first started doing my own tests. Very informative.You should continue to add R-009 until the color is red. Yes, I have a speed stir. And yes, the FC level has been higher than normal. Over 8 and up to 11. I hired a pool service because I’ll be having foot surgery. Almost every thing is off. I fired the pool service.

With a 50 CYA, that's not a problem for the TA test.
