I have been following everything so far on the forum and have had everything smooth for the year (shocking and maintaining proper numbers). I forgot over the last couple days to check my numbers and low and behold I now have algae growing on the bottom. Do I need to start the shock process over again?

We don't "shock" a pool, we SLAM it which is a process not a one time dose of magic potions. Here are the instructions: SLAM Process
If you are having algae you need to SLAM which may go fast if you get right on it, and then do a better job of maintaining your FC level/CYA level
