Algae treatment - first time newbie!

Nope, I never use the chlorine part of the comparator block. Just FAS-DPD.

Is there a point to chlorine block test if you do drop test?
No. Use the OTO TC test (yellow) for when the drop test does not make sense or if you have really learned your pool characteristics and can correlate the yellow shade to your normal FC. But still do the FAS-DPD drop test a couple times per week. Again, after you have really learned your pool water chemistry characteristics.

Looks like a lot of copper stains and black algae.

What happened to the heater?

I suspect that it got destroyed by low pH from trichlor tabs.

Your plaster looks mostly ruined.

When was the plaster done?

I inherited the pool a few months ago. It was left green for about half a year with no maintenance. Not sure about the heater. I think it works but its too expensive to operate due to electricity cost. Gas to the heater is off.

Also not sure about the plaster. I’m not sure how long I’ll keep the pool for. If theres too much damage or repairs become too costly, I might look consider removing it.

Worst case scenario you won't win the pretty pool contest but as long as you can clear up the algae maybe by way of drain, clean the plaster as best as possible then fill and enjoy what you have. You may just have to wait for some cooler weather to work on the pool surface as the hot sun isn't good for it.

That needs to be raised. I assume your fill water is fairly low in CH. Hetch Hetchy water?
Get some calcium chloride. Get CH to 250 ppm.
Update a week later-still waiting for calcium hardener to arrive

I was adding about a half gallon of 10pct liquid chlorine every day until it got to about 2.5 ( Wednesday) then I was doing it every other day instead. Added about half a gallon of muriatic acid to bring ph to 7.4-7.6 range last week

Here was todays readings. Stabilizer looks good
FC -0.5
PH -8.2
CYA - 20

I guess I probably need about half gallon chlorine everyday and half a gallon muriatic acid every week? I didn’t take TA levels today but do they fluctuate from week to week ? Last week it was 100.
