Is there any way to prevent algae from growing on the string that holds my thermometer? It only occurs right at/around the waterline.

The cheap algaecide based on Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride would probably work. Just dip the string in the solution to saturate it periodically. Don't pour any directly in the pool as it will create foam. Make sure that the algaecide does not contain copper.

Maybe make a solution of boric acid and saturate the string in that.
