I have been trying to help a friend who recently bought a house with a pool. Ha has not been on top of his testing at all but I managed to get his water clear. This morning his water was clear and he added 150lbs salt and 1 pound trichlor. It is now green within the span of a couple hours. While I know this is not any way to keep a proper balance I am wondering if algae can bloom this quickly.

Unfortunately that is the likely cause. Clorox sources their salt from fracking wastewater, which brings along unwanted minerals along with the salt. It's sadly very common for this to happen.

Iron. Get some polyfill in the skimmer now. See if you can trap some of the iron.

Reading up on the polyfil threads now. Does he put polyfil in a mesh laundry bag in the skimmer? Than swap as it gets black?Iron. Get some polyfill in the skimmer now. See if you can trap some of the iron.

You can do that. Some just put the polyfill straight in the skimmer. Some create elaborate buckets with polyfill in them and pump the water through the bucket using a sump pump, etc.
If the FC or pH is a bit elevated, letting the FC fall some or adding some acid may take the green away quickly.

Polyfil is getting delivered today but it is already looking much better. Where does the iron go if it hasn't been removed?

Returns to soluble iron. When pH is elevated or chlorine is higher, iron becomes rust, which you can see and filter out.
