Advice for rust spot on AGP

I have a 2 year old 15x30 salt water AGP. I had a builder put it up, and they installed the skimmer and return fitting. I connected the rest of the plumbing, including the salt generator. I noticed a small trail of rusty color dripping from the return fitting on the outside of the pool. I was not able to get it removed last season, but this year, while closing, I became concerned about how it looks. I also noticed a very slow leak on the skimmer housing where two parts connect (about 4 inches back from the pool wall). So, I just removed them both, and have (hopefully) attached pictures below showing the issues. The return fitting is clearly the bigger concern, and I am trying to understand exactly what caused the leak, which led to the rust and what, if anything, can be done to limit any further progression of rust. There is a sacrificial anode installed in the plumbing lines, on the return side after the salt cell. Any input is definitely appreciated.

It is rusting from the inside of the wall towards the outside. You will need to remove the liner to get to the wall to sand it and paint it. You 99% will not be able to reuse the liner I am afraid to tell you :(

The gaskets look like there were chewed up pretty good during the install so they did not form a good seal :(
