Adding pool antifreeze to skimmer after putting in plugs

I just had my pool closed and the guy put 1 gal of pool antifreeze into each skimmer, after plugging the hole with the gizmos. This is my 8th season and have never had them do that in the past. Is this normal? I’ve read online that this should not be done because it can get all gummy and gross over winter. I live in northern IL.

I put it in mine every year. It's designed for this use and potable.

Thank you, it just threw me off a bit because the other closers in previous yea never filled the skimmers with it after plugging the holes.

I am in northern illinois also and put 1/2 gal in each skimmer at closing
Just added insurance

With a mesh cover mine would just disperse into the pool once the water level rose to the skimmer level.

If the rain didn't fill the skimmer from the top and wash it into the pool first.

I use pool noodles which stay put when wedged tight.

Given your location in northern Illinois, it's reasonable for the pool professional to take extra precautions to ensure your pool is adequately protected from freezing temperatures.
