Adding Pea Gravel to Sand Filter

I just completed the Field Service Professional certification offered through NSPF. In the training on sand filters, it mentioned that some professionals add pea gravel prior to adding sand to protect the laterals and to "enhance the backwash cycle". I was wondering if this only applies to commercial sized sand filters or if this is standard for residential as well.

In your average residential filter adding gravel will offer little to no benefit. Except for possibly the largest of the residential line or if the filter design specifically calls for the use of pea gravel.

Large commercial filters need the gravel to better handle the large flow rates of a backwash cycle and to better distribute the water flow thru the entire sand bed.

Good to know - Thank you!
