A Colleagues Pool

So this mornings update is as follows:

Test Date
Test Time
FC
pH
TA
CH
CYA
8/2/2017
6:38 AM
35.5
7.8
110
225
80

Can't figure out why my TA is jumping all over the place, but I suspect it has something to do with invalid readings due to high FC currently. CC has been 0 after starting at 1.5, but I haven't been logging that here so I guess that is good.

I had him put half a jug of 8.25% bleach last night and half a jug this morning. That was obviously over zealous. Just going to have him put a quarter jug in tonite so it levels off a bit. Wasn't sure how much taking those pucks out last nigth would cause it to drop. Obviously higher then I'd like right now.

He says its slowly getting clearer, which is good, still cloudy for sure though. He also scrubbed a small part of the bottom last night with some dry acid in a sock and a very little came off, but not much. So unsure exactly what that is. My brother used to be a pool boy (though he doesn't agree with our method) also works with me and said it could have something to do with the dog going in and out all the time. I have no clue about that, but he printed out some literature on that. Anyway I ordered the stain test kit yesterday, but that could be a week so still just spinning in the wind for a bit on that front.

Any suggestions/advice anyone may have are more then appreciated.

Keep it at SLAM levels until he gets clear water (probably clearer than he has ever seen) and no buildup of dead algae on the bottom of the pool.

I would not test the pH or TA until the SLAM is over. The pH is NOT accurate at that FC. And the TA is not a significant item to be concerned with at this stage. You can also stop testing the CYA every day. It will not change unless he takes alot of water out of the pool.

No idea on the dog thing, wonder what the theory is there. Lots of folks on here that have dogs in the pool all the time and no staining.

Stay at it.

Take care.

Latest results are FC 34.5

He is getting discouraged though as he hasn't seen any clarity increase and the pool is still cloudy. I am telling him to bear with it.

I adjusted down telling him to put an 1/8th jug in a day now over the weekend and keep backwashing brushing and vacuuming. He's asking me about the little stuff floating around his pool I am guessing that is probably algae now. I get new pieces of information everyday. So just have to kill that off and let it drop to the bottom and keep vacuuming.

The latest is the FC dropped down to 20.5 I had him putting 2 cups of 8.25% bleach in everyday over the weekend except today. I was quite surprised to see it go so low, but he said the water is very clear now and the stain on the bottom is a lot lighter.

Also even though the dry acid scrub didn't work he got some vitamin C over the weekend and that does remove the stain. Not sure what that means.

Based on what was going on last Thursday and what went on today I was worried the 2 cups a day was going to be too much. I was wrong. I think that stain starting to apparently lift maybe was eating at the chlorine and maybe it is just algae at the bottom. Who knows.

Anyway I have him putting in 3.5 jugs when he gets home tonight to bring it back up to SLAM level. (possibly a little below, but given I can only test 1-2x per day I don't want to get it too high.

Any thoughts based on all the new data and the fact it is clearing up. I don't think it is anywhere near done with the SLAM even though he is excited and it is starting to look good. He has vacuumed quite a bit of stuff that was floating around and now dropped to the bottom and got vacuumed up.

As you are only able to test and dose about 1 or 2 times per day it will be very slow. Good to hear things are getting better. If Vitamin C takes the stain off it is metal. Most likely copper. Once the algae is controlled he will have to decide if he wants to deal with that. Pretty involved and then has to either drain to get rid of the copper or use sequestrate on a regular basis to keep it in solution.

Good luck.

FC this morning was at 23.0 after putting 3 and a half jugs in yesterday. Having him change to 5 jugs today as something is eating that chlorine up. Pool is getting clearer. My colleague is starting to get very impatient. Not sure given the frequency I can test how long this is going to take.

Is he ready to get his own test and follow the SLAM? All this will be for not if he goes back to pucks and low FC after you are done.

He can get a TF100 pretty quickly as they ship from N Carolina.

It will take time. I would think improvement would be encouraging to him.

Good luck.

He's going to just use bleach for the rest of this year and then next year if he can switch over to swg and supplement with bleach. I think he's going to buy the kit next year but who knows I'm just trying to help out where I can. He doesn't have a smart phone and can't use excel so unless he learns one might be difficult

Been a good few days for his pool. This morning test was 25.5 FC last night was 26.0 FC, The CC was 0.5 and 0.5, so the OFCLT has been passed. Letting it drift down this weekend then will do a full test and get the normal chemistry under control. The green stain is a lot lighter and it comes up with Vitamin C as mentioned before. So we'll use the Jacks Magic Stain Detector once the chemistry is under control. Thanks again for all the help. Feeling a lot better about things right now then I was just 2 days ago.

Ok so this mornings update. The pool has been crystal clear for awhile. No more chlorine pucks or any of that nonsense. It is finally dropping down from SLAM levels and FC is 13.0 this morning. It is going to be a sunny day today so I have him adding a jug in when he gets home tonight and getting a rough idea for how much will need to be added daily. Test result as follows:

FC 13.0
CC 0.5
pH 7.3
TA 100
CYA 95 (high I know, but I figure this will get taken care of through evaporation and if we ended up doing partial drains for the stain).

Speaking of the stain he did Jacks Magic Step 1 last night and it seems to indicate an Iron Scale Stain. Vitamin C is still the best at taking the stain up.

With that said figuring the Jacks Magic Step 2 is going to cost him $310.00 and Step 3 is going to cost $100.00 and then $10.00 a week into perpetuity if he goes this step.

I don't think that's a good idea and I am thinking Vitamin C all the way and then just do some partial drains to dilute the raised Iron Scale once he gets to working on the stain.

Our biggest issue is it is easy to get rid of the stain in the shallow end and on the walls, but how do we use the Vitamin C to lift the stains in the deep end, can't exactly get down their and scrub with our hands, do we need to get a diver or does anyone have any neat tricks or is there another way we haven't even thought of that we can just lift it chemically.

CYA will not reduce through evaporation. If it were me at this point in the season I'd keep the FC high enough for the CYA, retest next spring. If still high, drain/replace.

If the vitamin C works, you can crush some up in a sock and let it sit on the stains. That should help lift them.
