I just received a quote from a pool builder that included a Hayward Tristar pump. How does it compare to an Ecostar? Which one is better for a roughly 14k gallon pool without a spa or water features?
The Ecostar is certainly a bigger pump than you need ... for that matter the Tristar is also likely overkill.
Have you considered a smaller 2-speed pump? Cheaper up front, most of the electrical savings, and less worry about the electronics messed up from nearby lightning.
Does not sound like you have a need for a lot of speeds.

The Tristar is included with the pool. I could probably ask to downgrade the pump and upgrade the filter. Currently the quote includes a Hayward C1500 (150 sq ft) filter.
