Sand was already a million years old when it was bagged up to sell you. A few years inside your filter is nothing.
Gurgling is probably trapped air. Check that the water level is high enough that the skimmer isn't creating a vortex and that the skimmer flapper isn't jammed somehow.
No. You actually don't. You can deep clean it or acid clean it to remove excessive build up but actually needing to change sand is rare. Such as when converting from Bacquacil to chlorine.
I rather just change the sand rather the cleaning it. Sand is only $9.00 for 50 pounds and it takes less than 1 hour to change it. I had my pool since 2011 and I have changed it once already, today matter of fact. Just vacuum the old sand out and replace it.
