black algae

Greetings from Sacramento, CA. I just returned from the pool store (again ) to test water and ask about getting rid of some Black Algae. They recommended shock, wire brush, 24 hrs, black algaecide, brush, shock, clarifier, shock, maintenance algaecide... $100 later. I also have some light green algae on walls and swim outs.

I am sick of pouring $$$ into the water only to have problems return. HELP!!!

23k gal., sta-rite system 3 cartridge filter, ozonator, Frogger mineral pack. Water tested as follows:

pH 8.0
TA 130
CYA 25
Calcium 300
Phosphates 200

First step is to return the algaecide, shock (unless it is liquid shock), and clarifier. Next step is to order the recommended test kit. While you are waiting for the test kit, read up in pool school, especially anything about algae, the ABC's of pool chemistry, and SLAM. After you get your test kit, post up a full set of results, and we will go from there. For now, add enough liquid chlorine or bleach to keep your FC above 2 at all times.

Step one: order a proper test kit. Best value is the TF100, which can be ordered from http://tftestkits.net or Pool Supply World in California.

Step two: get some bleach in that water now. At least one jug of 8.25% Chlorox, just to hold things steady for now. Add that much every day until your kit arrives.

Step three: Add enough acid - dry or liquid, whatever you have around - to lower pH to about 7.4. http://www.poolcalculator.com/ can do the math.

Step Four: Start reading Pool School

Step Five: Hopefully by the time your kit arrives, you will have realized how totally useless the pool frog and the ozonator are, and will remove/shut off/empty/do whatever it takes to disable them. There's a chance that what you think is black algae could be metal stains, thanks to the pool frog. Does it look anything like the pictures in this thread?

Step Six, when the test kit arrives, run all the tests and post results here and someone will be along to guide you. For sure the SLAM process is called for, but don't just immediately jump into that; you might need to fine-tune pH and/or drain some water first.
