Hello All,

New pool owner here , did my best to find answer before posting, really want to learn and maintain the pool DIY

Just for my Taylor kit a week ago and did few times testing , compare with Leslie and added some chemicals based on recommendations
Of Taylor Chemistry Booklet and Pool Math App.

First 2 weeks pool builder just added Muriatic acid and on day 10 added liquid chlorine.
CYA on Leslie’s test results showed 0

Balanced PH and added chlorine and dry Stabilizer.

Now readings are
PH 7.4
FC 0.2
TA 75
CYA 75
CH 190

Pool Math recommend SLAM and drain some water to lower CYA

Question is CYA 75 that critical to drain some water ? Or better to focus on get stable FC level and /or other numbers ?

Please help

Welcome to the forum

Time to follow the FC/CYA Levels. Issue with a CYA of 80, you need to have FC above 10 ppm, and pH test is not valid with a FC above 10 ppm. For a non - SWCG pool, it is best to not go over 50 ppm CYA in your climate.

In,

How much CYA (Stabilizer) did you add???

If your pool was at zero CYA, you would have had to add about 6 lbs of CYA.

I want to make sure that your current CYA reading makes sense or if you have a testing error...

Thanks,

Jim R

Thank you very much, this forum is very helpful! Will be going over all available information. Just found info about diluted CYA test , can’t wait to check that as well

Stop going to the pool store. You have a great test kit; use it exclusively.

Did you get algae? 10 days in California without chlorine is a long time.

Has it been at least 30 days since you filled the pool? If so, you can add salt and start using your SWG.
I did not get algae at all, water is been clear all the time, we do not have any trees around, NPT Stonescapes mini if it make any difference is plaster type.
30 days will be August 30th , can’ t wait to convert to SWG
Hope pool builder will help with that . I am reading some posts about water has to be balanced when you switch to salt, is it correct?

I added 2 pounds first, tested next day it showed results of zero, I added the rest 2 pounds . Total 4 pounds of 4 pounds … maybe I just did mistake and misread instructions?

That is 50 ppm CYA. If that is all you added -- nothing by the pool builder, no trichlor pucks, no dichlor shock.
Yes,

Yes that is all that was added? How definite are you of the pool volume? Whom gave you that volume?

I tried to do my best math by calculating dimensions and subtracting tanning ledge and sitting bench volume… I was not home when pool was filling so I do not know exact volume

OK -- well, for now if you are absolutely sure the PB did not add any CYA nor CYA containing product, and the volume is within 10% of actual, use the 50 ppm CYA level for your FC. Try testing again in a few days. Try this
When you do the CYA test, try this next time.

Once you have your solution ready, back to the sun, etc. Fill the vial to a line, say 80, lower the vial to your waist level and glance for the dot, you see it, add solution to the 70 line, glance, see it, repeat until you no longer see it with a glance. Then use the CYA value one step above the line you read. So if you stopped at 50, use 60 ppm CYA.

The vial is in logarithmic scale. So it is not viable to interpolate between the lines. Just use the whole numbers, such as 50, 40, 30, ....

Thank you , will definitely test again with Taylor kit , I think it’s too early to give up !
I would say CYA was more 70 than 80 this why I got number in the middle .Wondering if
We want to switch to SWG in a week CYA of 70 would be appropriate to keep or we still need to drain some water to lower it ?
Oh I wish I find this forum when we sign contract to build a pool and by the time it’s built I am a pro in pool maintenance )

this was THE BEST ADVISE EVER!!! thank you very much! for the future readers - please do your testing again next day ! i have a feeling i was doing wrong testing readings... my CYA in recommended range by Pool Math math which is 30 . For now it's Calcium Hardness needs to be improved, so may hear from me again lol...
