My multiport valve has a slow leak thru plumbed back flow PVC.

I will be replacing the valve at some point in the next few weeks, but until then it would be nice not to waste water. I am curious if there is a clever solution for using the existing union connection and plugging it without plumbing in a ball valve... ideally a threaded solution.

What water are you trying to save? Is the pool higher than the equipment? A 2" expansion plug would probably work.

The equipment is below the bottom of the pool. I found a threaded plug that worked. I was losing between 250 - 500 gallons a day. I'm replacing all the equipment and redoing the plumbing on pad in two or three weeks, so I just needed a stop gap. I wont have to backwash until after equipment is replaced.
