I have a pentair ultratemp heat pump and a Hayward 400k btu nat gas heater to heat a 50k gallon pool. Hayward fails regularly so I want to add a redundant 400l btu pentair heater in series and never run any heater at same time as the other. My question is how to configure and wire in pentair intellicenter. Can I just add this as a hybrid heater in a circuit?

Welcome to TFP.

A heat pump and a gas heater do not equal a hybrid heater.

Your gas heater relay is used by the Hayward heater.

You need to get a Connected MasterTemp heater and connect it as a MasterTemp using RS-485 controls while your Hayward heater will be a Gas heater.

You want to add a second heater in a parallel plumbing arrangement with a valve to stop water to one or the other, not in series. Series will add too much restriction to the flow. If you have the proper gas supply, in a parallel configuration you could run both at the same time and heat faster.
What is failing on the Hayward heater?
