1963 pool resurection

Good job mike. You are on a much faster track than us hand diggers. You are also lucky not too have holes punched. Was the house advertised with a pool? Or was it a surprise? You may want to check to see if it is existing or not. Depending on what county/ city you live in.
Got a pool builder yet or doing it yourself?
Good luck.
More pictures later after day 2 of digging.

you got that right froggy.
this thing is a behemoth. i cant believe how big it is. it always seemed kinda small before. check out the stairs, its like city hall!

i dont know what weve gotten ourselves into. but hopefully some nice clean water soon!

You guys are moving along! This pool is going to be one of my fav's!

It was advertised with an out of service permitted pool and the city shows it as having a pool. We are going to get somebody to do all the tile, coping, grout and maybe rough the plumbing. I have a long history of electrical and mechanical so I want to do all the finish and control work myself. I just need somebody with pool plumbing experience to give me a "best practices" lesson to get me started.

I know what you mean about the pool looking bigger. I thought ours was small until it was empty!!!

I love these resurrections! I don't know why, but they are fascinating to me. There have been a few through the years, and I always enjoy them.

Mike, I do encourage you to start a new thread on yours so we can all follow it separately. It certainly looks deserving of it's own thread, and I know we'd all enjoy following it as well.

Jimbo, this is a great update, and I'm really glad you came back to keep us posted. I bet the kids are all excited and can't wait to see more too.

(I secretly hope you find a treasure in there)

Yeah brushpup it is kind of exciting except for not knowing how the building department is going to react. I may have to switch gears and get a big pool remodel co. Involved so they can flex their muscle when necessary.
Mike, that's good news for you. Plumbing and electrical should be easy. Any pool equipment left behind? Not really to use but to see what type of pipe is in there might be a big help. Ours needs total replacement. Copper. I found the first evidence of it yesterday.
No digging today. I have a whole driveway full of dirt and trees. Maybe that should be my new signature.
Maybe I'll take some pics of that and post later.

That driveway looks crazy! There is no equipment left but I'm hoping the gardener (was here when the pool was still in service) knows where it was and I can maybe find the old pipes buried. Worst case it's all new plumbing.

I'll start a new thread as soon as I make some progress to post. Im sure it will be full of stupid questions.

Mike if you do start a new thread post a link or something to it here do we don't miss it. It looks like you guys will be swimming long before us. Which will be good for me actually to see your progress as an inspiration to keep trudging along jumping through the hoops to get to the finish line. Also, maybe we will inspire other knuckleheads like us to do this. We are not the first though others on here have made this happen too. There is at least one maybe two links in this thread to see similar situations.
Cheers

I know when we started digging our pool, we didn't anticipate how much dirt would be moved. It is amazing to see it pile up! It's like once it's shoveled, it grows!

Mike, I really hope you do, and if so, there are no stupid questions.

Jimbo,

Do your neighbors think you're a nut job digging all this up? Sorry if I missed it, but what are your plans for being rid of the dirt?

I hope you know someone with a skid steer.

brushpup, my neighbors dont think im crazy, they know it. i am always doing things that blow their minds like when we moved in and i gutted the place and replaced the entire electrical system from the service drop to every last light, switch and plug. i added speakers in the ceiling and backyard off a central receiver, smoothed out the textured walls, replaced all the plumbing with copper lines, removed floor heater and added central heating and air conditioning and ran gas, hot and cold water underground out to the garage with a 100a subpanel plus cable tv line internet and smoke detector connections without a wire in sight anywhere near my house. oh and added a urinal in my garage among many other things. so, no this is nothing new to them lol.
ill give you a hint as to how we are gonna get rid of all this dirt.
