evening surprise

My wife was sitting out on the patio while 2 of the kids were swimming. They are old enough that we can see their heads bobbing around while they play, but not the actual water itself while sitting on the patio. I came out to say hi and got quite the surprise.

A good eye will see the water level about 2" below the return!! My first thought was where's the leak. Then I notice the pool hose hanging over the edge. Whew... no leak, but about lots of water siphoned out on the ground with the pump sucking dry. 3 hours and 1700 gallons later the pool was full again. Tomorrow I'll have to run a full set of tests and rebalance the water. I had just added 10ppm CYA last week...

Dave,

I did the same thing with a garden hose... added water to the pool, then turned off the water at the house and disconnected the hose from the spigot and dropped it on the ground. I intended to put the hose away and forgot.. I had unknowingly built a great siphon, which worked much better than when I was stealing gas from my parents car... :p

Just like you, it drained about a foot of water before I caught it...

Good catch and easy fix...

I have not done this but I have put water hose in pool to top off the water only to forget to set a timer so I don't forget. Well low and behold my wife has said to me twice this year "is there water running outside". Note to self set the timer on phone old man :)

I had the vac head in the opposite end of the pool overnight and day. When she and the kids got in, she unplugged the hose from the skimmer and tossed all the hose overboard but left the vac head straight down below the skimmer. As said, this made a great siphon. It was probably draining for a while until I got home from work to my surprise!

I actually use an old pool hose to siphon water off of my winter cover, and to lower the pool if I get a lot of rain. It works faster and easier that any pump I have tried.

I have a small weight zip tied to the end of it. When I want to lower the water level, I start the siphon, and then use a clamp to clamp the hose to my deck railing so that the end of the hose is at the level I want the water. It runs on its own until it gets to that level and then stops. I do keep an eye on it, just in case the clamp slips and the hose falls in (never had that happen yet)
