I've got a 1 hp pump coming. Should I use a 16" sand filter or a 19" sand filter with it? Or bigger? I'm not understanding the Pool School article on sizing your filter.
16" or 19"?

Yeah, but doesn't there come a point where your filter is too big for your pump? Or too small?

The filter can be too small for the pump and cause problems for the filter. On the larger size, cartridge and DE have really no limit while for sand filters, manufactures usually specify 15 GPM/sq-ft for backwashing. However, I have my doubts that is really required as long as the backwash flow rate is higher than the filter rate which in most cases usually is.
