Before installing a SWG

Hi, I called to install an SWG and the pool guy said watch out for high calcium and copper piping. The question is what sort of calcium level should I look out for. Also how can I tell whether the piping is copper? Do I just dig a little bit at the ground where the piping is and just hope it doesn't turn to copper after that? Is there any other gotchas to look for?
