Maybe you could try to do a bucket test to see if the pool is leaking?? See this thread - Bucket test accurate? One of our Moderators made a highly sensitive, DIY bucket tester out of components found in his local Home Depot
If it were just a crack in the plaster, I would not be so concerned. BUT, the crack runs all the way up the pool tile. That tells me that the ground has shifted and the crack is likely into the gunite shell. That kind of repair isn't cheap and is usually paired with a replaster/retile/remodel job as you might as well spend the money and do it right.
Any chance you can hit the seller up for some cash off the sale price ??
The pool contractor told me he wouldn't know the extent of the damage until he opened it up but that starts to sound like the cure is worse than the disease to me.
