Pool Resurface Project - UPDATE (PICS!!)

Ok previously I had been concerned about bondcoat and resurfacing without chipping away all of the material/plaster but the overall consensus has been that its fine and typical for my area. (Atlanta).

We are on the schedule for 2 weeks from now.

I am going with Tropics Blue minipebble and really not sure on the tile. I have been recommended the GMS and AZ606 tiles but thats basically what I already have. I also want to mention that I dont even like flagstone but my house back patio is covered with it so I am stuck. I dont have an unlimited budget but was debating on changing the coping while I was doing this project. I cant really find many pictures of flagstone decking with a different coping though. I have found tons of other decks with a flagstone coping!

1. My current coping is not loose.
2. one side of my coping has a natural look to it but the other side looks like it was done later or perhaps there was a reason it had to be pulled up and re-laid. You can see it in the pic if you look closely.
3. I thought about maybe a concrete coping or something but I am not sure.
4. I like the glass tile.

This has been said so many times, but I hate having to make this decision. I dated my wife for 10 years before I asked her to marry me; commitment is not my best attribute!!!

Re: Pool Resurface Project

770,

Welcome to TFP... A Great resource for all your pool questions... :lovetfp:

The chipping out seems to me to be based on where you are located. In some areas they chip out all the plaster and other areas, like here in the DFW area, I'm not sure anyone has all the plaster chipped out. I've had two pools redone and on both of them they just knocked out and loose plaster, applied some bonding material, and then the plaster.

If you go with any type of pebble, make sure you visit a pool that has already been done. Depending on the type it can be as rough as sandpaper on your feet. The 2" sample is just not big enough to make a solid decision.

Re: Pool Resurface Project

I thought Woodstock, GA. The red clay and iron staining gave it away for me...
I have a name of the local Aquabright company if you would like it. I haven't used them yet so I can't give direct experience...

Re: Pool Resurface Project

We just re-plastered, they chipped out around the tile line, all fittings and wherever there was any loose material. Painted on a bonding agent. All prices based on lineal feet of perimeter rather than surface area, go figure. We went with white quartz plaster, classic look. All bids we got were within a few hundred dollars. Checked references and interviewed previous clients. Well worth the time doing that. Weeds out the slick talking sales people.

Re: Pool Resurface Project

don't know what is done / accepted in your area however it all comes down to adhesion, like painting over rust if the sub surface is not sound you can not expect the new plaster to adhere , here in so. calif all the plaster is removed down to the gunite .

Re: Pool Resurface Project

We also just got the rain-away finished under the deck area. I really am going to enjoy this during the summer here in Georgia. As you can see, there is flagstone every square inch of this backyard.

Re: Pool Resurface Project - UPDATE

Here are pictures to update progress. Demo was done yesterday on the pool and spa. We ran into an issue with the spa when they started chipping off the spa their hammer went through the bench and it was just soft sand underneath. Builder said that they usually shoot the spa last and probably ran low on cement so they didnt get the ratio correct (gunite pool, not shotcrete).

They dug out the bench and are going to form and pour new benches before putting the stone scapes on.

Final color option I went with was Tropics Blue and GMS blue tile.

Re: Pool Resurface Project - UPDATE

Pouring the bench in the spa today. I am in North Georgia but apparently the water table is high where my house is. The pool fills up with almost a foot of water every night. They drain it and over the night water comes in the hydrostatic valve.

The second picture was taken after about 2 hours.

Pebble is going in next Thursday. Tile was finished yesterday.

Re: Pool Resurface Project - UPDATE

Subscribing to this informative thread. We are considering re-plastering and pebbletec in the near future for our 40+ year old gunite pool and can learn from you being located in Atlanta and all.

Re: Pool Resurface Project - UPDATE

Aubie, I am assuming you are an Auburn fan. WDE!

Here are some more updates from today. I really am glad this has helped someone. I read allot and found some info but I knew when I did this project I wanted to put as much info as possible up of each step.

1. I had to get 2x2 GMS blue tile shipped in because apparently their california warehouse was the only place that had them. I am so glad I did. I do not like the diamond pattern on steps and did not want to just have them plain.

2. Bond coat went in yesterday and today they are pebbling.

Here are some pictures of the progress, I left a few hours ago and will post some pictures when I get home.

3. Acid wash is tomorrow and fill. I have to go out of town Sunday so I wont be able to enjoy it until next sunday.

4. Pulling the pool lights was so easy. I bought a 150' steel fish tape from home depot and a bottle of electrical lube. Pulled the cables through with the help of a friend. Super easy.

I did go ahead and setup a pool company to handle the maintenance because I travel so much it just wouldnt be an option.

Hopefully this thread helped some people. I will also be posting pictures tomorrow once its starts to fill. I bought a water meter so I can know exactly how much water it took to fill.

770guy - You posted "I did go ahead and setup a pool company to handle the maintenance because I travel so much it just wouldnt be an option."

In the end, that's completely up to you. Just remember that nobody is going to care about your pool more than you do. So you for sure want to do your own testing to verify that they are maintaining a safe and sanitary pool and make sure to keep on top of the CYA. When it gets too high, you or they will have to do a drain and refill to get it back down to a reasonable level.

Here are pics when I got home. Tomorrow is acid wash and starting to fill.
