John's right that using the return is the easiest way to prime the vac hose
However, there's always another way If, for whatever reason, using the return isn't a viable or preferable option, you can sink the vac head (attached to the poll ) and feed the hose into the water, having it go down ~2' before it starts to curl. When you get to the end of the hose that gets attached to the skimmer or vac port, you'll see the water come out of the end before the cuff gets submerged. If you do this while kneeling next to the skimmer, it's quick and easy to prime the hose and put it on the skimmer vacuum plate
