About to get solar installed for new build, company suggested their automatic temperature "set it/forget about it" control ($500).

I like the idea, yet I'm also having an upgraded automation installed for pool. Like many models, it has a relay slot for solar, and 3 temperature sensors.

Is the solar control redundant?

Probably so, most pool automation has the ability to control solar. All that is needed to control solar is panel temp, water temp and the ability to open the solar valve. Mine also rampsmup yhe speed on my VS pump. I would definitely read up on your automation package before buying a solar controller. Most mfg have manuals available for download on their websites
