First time Pool Owner

The water in the pool seem like it's doing well. The FC level is steady and didn't drop more than 1ppm last night. Seem like my slam is a success. Should I just leave the FC level alone until it get down to 8 and maintain it at that level?

Before we call the SLAM a success, let's confirm you passed all 3 criteria. You stated the FC did not drop more than 1 ppm overnight (that is good). But what about the other two items:
- Is the water clear (can you see down to the deep end clearly)?
- Did you test to ensure you had less than .5 ppm of CC (combined Chlorine)?

You want to be absolutely sure of all those. Normally the OCLT test (1ppm loss) is the last thing we test, but do you want to make sure the others pass as well. Not sure about your area, but 2 hours away from you here in San Antonio it's overcast. That will help retain FC as long as we have heavy cloud cover which in-turn helps save bleach for your SLAM. :) In the end, only you really know if you clearly passed al 3 items.

Yes I can see the bottom of the pool very clear and CC is at 0 or less than .5

My next thing is take apart the filter and clean the grid and backwash. Probably will need help with that process.

Ok so I did an FC test early this morning @ 6:00 am and my FC is about 32. I did another test @11 am and it went down to about 29, is it normal for it to drop about 3 FC in 5 hours? The weather today is cloudy and the sun come in and out in Houston today.

Yes, your FC will drop quite rapidly now because you finished your SLAM and the extra FC will be removed quickly. Once your FC gets closer to its standard target number, which for you I believe is an FC of 9 based on that CYA of 80, the loss should slow down. Ideally now, you want to maintain your FC around 9. Never let it get below 6. Now that you passed your SLAM, you should be able to feed your pool bleach each day to an FC of about 10-11 or so to allow for daily loss. With an algae-free pool, your daily FC drop should be between 2-4 ppm, so check your FC everyday to make sure you didn't drop below 6-7.

In the future, if you lose a lot of FC in one day, or the clarity of your water changes, now you know to perform an Pool School - Perform the Overnight FC Loss Test (OCLT).

We only lose FC to two things: organic materials (algae) and the sun. So yes, during the hours of darkness (overnight), when you lose FC it's because of organic materials. A small amount is reasonable (hence the 1 ppm rule). But anything more indicates live/active algae and needs to be SLAM'd.

Looking forward to pics. :)

How do I share pictures on photobucket?

Just upload your pics to Photobucket (free), then copy & paste the IMG code for that pic from Photobucket to your TFP post. Works great.

Also, you can try going to the bottom of your quick reply post where it says “Go Advanced”, and then down to where it says “Manage Attachments”. It may let you upload them that way. They may show-up large because you can't adjust the size of the attachment, but it may work.

It's an evil device invented to have you beholden to a life of being "pool stored" and always living on the edge of having a swamp instead of a pool!

But seriously, it's a chlorine puck feeder. The problem is that using chlorine pucks long term to chlorinate will either raise your CYA too high or your Calcium level too high depending on which type of pucks you use.

You will want to chlorinate with liquid bleach or a salt water chlorine generator.

See if you can return them and get your money back. Unless you're away from the house for a few days, you'll probably never use them. You manually feed that oasis now, so regular bleach is the best. As you've already seen/heard, tablets will drive your CYA through the roof if used too much.
