I was referring to when you clean your pump basket, so taking the lid off and losing suction.

I typically shut off the suction side valve before the pump and the MPV to closed which prevents water from draining while cleaning the strainer basket, no need for a check valve.

Fair enough... I can't shut my valves before they hit my pump so check valve is needed there to prevent draining back to pool. Maybe people who close their pools for winter have shut off capability and people like myself on the West Coast don't
