How certain are you that the leak is at the water line? There is an article in Pool School here that gives some basic advice for pinpointing a leak's location. Cracked grout isn't going to cause a leak...your tile could be completely gone and you won't lose a significant amount of water...

Which reel do you have? I can't remember seeing replacement cranks, but I bet you could get a metal shop in your area to make some for you.

Yeah, just use white PVC and paint them. You'll want them to match the house anyway.

Do you have a spa, that you would want to heat up in a hurry? If so, gas is the way to go, always. Otherwise a heat pump works very well here.

If you take the float off you will have more space...then just take it out and see what you are dealing with! Hopefully the pipe is just crooked.

Your meter could be off if it's reading 282. I used to have a cheap meter that read 140-150 at all the outlets in the house.

Do you have a bunch of extra pieces...I mean, enough to mess up a couple and be OK? I would try cutting it to be close in shape using a tile saw or a grinder, then chipping the edges with a hammer and stone chisel.

Welcome to TFP! Is it actually cold water, as in pulled from the pool, or just not heated? I know my parents heater will do the same thing (heat in spurts) but don't know if it's normal or not.

I suspect they would end up disintegrating in the sun, just like a solar cover.

There certainly isn't any risk to the structure of the pool...so you can tell your husband he can keep being cheap.

Have you tried testing the stains to see if they're iron or organic? Iron - lightens under a vitamin C tablet organic - lightens under a trichlor tablet
