Industry moving toward CYA at or below 50 ppm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I've understood.. getting by with the lower FC with a SWG has to do with the consistency of generating chlorine, vs a 1 time per day with manual dosing. Manual dose=higher to make sure FC never gets below the bottom parameters. SWG= consistent, all through the day...

    Natural Swimming Pools (NSPs)

Thanks for the post ChemGeek. Also would be nice to hear from linen on progress if you decide to keep up with it. A good friend of mine drives truck from either coast to coast at times. He said many years ago, he quit drinking the local water away from home, wherever he has been as it has given...

    Testing for Copper

Exactly. My copper kit is on backorder from TFtestkits, but I do want to know what the level is. Finding out this spring after my pool turned Emerald, that our Municipal fill water has 1.2 ppm copper, that was the deciding factor in wanting to know what was in my pool. I haven't needed or used...

    Borates next?

Re: Borates next? Done! Borates are in!! And the results are......... Thanks for everyone's help & guidance. So far couldn't be happier! Now to get my tomatoes mulched with that bale of hay..

    Borates next?

 My TA is 80!! 6 days pretty much non-stop acid & aeration, I believe I made it. 4 gallons of Muratic. Maybe one more acid dose this evening depending on PH reading. Sounds backwards, but the PH seems to bounce back faster now the lower the TA fell (from 6.8 - 7.2). Maybe it's my...

    Borates next?

Aargh! Just checked TA. Topped off water last night about an inch or so. TA back at 180. This is what I've always fought trying to lower TA. Thought maybe topping off with the softner water wouldn't add back so much TA, unless I did an error in the test. I actually wiped the tip of the dropper...

    Borates next?

HaHa! Good Chem Geek! I did find a couple more heavy rocks, & with Nyties holding them, it is sitting near the bottom.

    Borates next?

Thanks Jason. Yes it gives me lots of bubbles. Currently the way I have it operating right now, it's almost like an Aquarium airstone. Millions of tiny bubbles. I wish I could get a better pic of it working.

    Borates next?

Can anyone say "Aeration"? :whoot: I have my boric acid on the way from Duda Dsl. Now working on lowering the TA. Seems to work very well. I adjusted my small compressor to shut off at about 60 lbs & kick on about 30 PSI and fine tune at the hose end with an air regulator. This seems to give...

My town is the Copper Capital?

I understand. Thanks for responding Dave. I have a twin tank Kinetico, so I'm always on soft water in the house, even during regeneration. Time to get some valves & switch the closest outside faucet to softened water. It'll help with washing the car also!

My town is the Copper Capital?

On that subject, I searched & found the MSDS on the "Utikem Iron Myte" previous to adding it. Here's the link, http://www.menards.com/msds/101689_001.pdf, listing Citric Acid, 1-hydroxyethane, 1-1-diphosphonic acid. Also the bottle says it contains Organophosphonic Acid derivitives. I did buy a...

My town is the Copper Capital?

Here's my story, (sorry for the long post) After a citric acid treatment this spring ridding the pool of stains on my 17 yr agp, (worked very well after some time & too much citric), finally got FC to hold after 3 weeks. I've been working on tuning the SWCG in, supplementing with some bleach...

    Borates next?

Good to know. Thanks both! I'll get pics of my redneck soaker hose aerator in action, get my TA down & get with the action. Now I just gotta find a place to buy the boric around this little "one horse town" lol.

    Too much Muriatic Acid

Exactly what I found out linen. It has some footnotes below the "effects" box discussing PH calculations, that I later read, which made me feel better, along with actual testing.

    Too much Muriatic Acid

I made the mistake myself just this morning. PH was 7.8, wanted to lower to 7.2 ( rising ph with swcg) Calculator said 2qts + 2cups. Added. Then read on bottom "effects of adding 80 oz 31.4%" =1.49 drop in ph. Almost panicked, checked hr later & throughout the day, landed on 7.0. Turns out I...

    Borates next?

No problem, & Yep, I'll do that. I just ordered some refills from Dave S. on Friday & maybe can have them included in the same shipment as well. I'm ready to give borates a try. Kinda excited, actually. Like I said, nothing necessary, & everything is "swimmingly", I'd just like to try them out...

    Borates next?

yep, gotcha zea. I've done that procedure in the past, I've had my TA down well within range, only to have it rise back up from the fill water. It's a never ending battle keeping it down, although it's never caused problems. Last year adding the SWCG, I finally gave up trying to purposely lower...

    Borates next?

So, my pool has been up & running, after my citric acid stain treatment the chlorine took quite a bit of tending to, to finally hold so the SWCG can take over, what's next? Been thinking of adding borates. No necessary reasons, just would like to try it out. Here in Iowa, usually open in May...

    My water sparkels like diamonds

After reading & rereading, it's almost humorous. Can't post a picture "because" nothing is better than swimming in this. Too funny. I wouldn't swim in it.

    Aeration and PH

I made mine from a sump pump I had around. I brought the pipe up to pool height, tee'd it, then drilled 12 1/8" holes in the pipes on each side of the tee. I capped off the ends, & fit the pipes in the tee. I didn't glue the pipes going sideways from the tee, and I can point them different...
