Going out of town for 4 days. Chlorine tablet in skimmer?

Normally do the TFP method with 10% bleach added daily. But we are going out of town for 4 days and i dont want to come home to a lost pool. My thoughts were - 1. Full tests right before we go - make sure everything is good before we go. 2. Bring it to shock level. Thatll cost me a $5...

Increase FC prior to swimmer load?

absolutely. Welcome to advanced pool management... 8-) like the other two said, either bring it to just under shock level or to highest FC target level. I split the difference and just go about 5ppm above target level. Then test again once everyone leaves. As long as you dont go over shock...

    Testing CYA with Taylor K-2006

FWIW, I always do the CYA test 3 times. (Meaning, I fill up til I cant see the dot, then dump it back in the little squirt bottle, and do it again.) I do 3 tests under different light conditions just to triple check. That CYA test is one I want to make darn sure I get correct.

Starting over again.... couple of questions....

its amazing how much of this you forget in just year and halfs time of not doing it. We had to sell out last house and build a bigger one (our family keeps growing) :D So we dont have the doughboy buried 16 x 32 anymore..... man I miss it......:( Its going to be a few years before we can...

Should I even bother with CYA...

but since CYA is strictly "suncreen for pools" (words from the link) then I would think it wouldnt be necessary if the pool is in the shade 95% of the time and the other 5% is indirect sunlight. but I guess, erroring on the side of caution, rather than invest in a test kit just for cya, ill...

Should I even bother with CYA...

We just sold our house with our lovely doughboy pool that we already miss. We are renting a house right now until we finish contstructing our new house. My little ones have to have something for the summer so I bought a 49.99 intex summer scapes pool. 10ft x 2.5 feet ~1500 gallons and...

Opened too late, pool slightly green...

update: seems to be clearing nicely. i have had to backwash twice as my filter would get so full, nothing was coming out of returns. ugly nasty brown backwash water. I run my dolphin nautilus every 6 hours to keep the dead algea cleaned up of the bottom and im brushing the sides twice a day...

Opened too late, pool slightly green...

here is what we are starting with. I over shot somehow the FC amount needed. Pool cal says 13 ppm for cya of 30, I poured in 3 121oz jugs of 8%, tested an hour later at opposite end of the pool, got 18ppm, oh well, better a bit too high than too low. ill test again in the a.m. before I head...

Opened too late, pool slightly green...

yes. it is obscured just slighty above the 30 mark. how long does it usually take to get from aqua marine green to crystal clear? a few days?

Opened too late, pool slightly green...

Water is still at 55 degrees, chemical numbers: FC - 3 CC - 0 pH - 7.2-7.3... its kinda in the middle... tested it twice. CYA - ~25ish... hard to tell as the tube maxes out a 30... Obviously I need to slam, the wife is grabbing me 8 bottles of bleach as I type this... Ill slam it til it goes...

Question about draining my pool and my grass

Well, when I backwash I take the hose and use it to water my lawn, as I can't see wasting water. Never had any issues. My ph is always 7.4-7.6 and fc at 9 with a cya of 55. Oh, and stop using pucks!! :p

Is storing your pump and multiport valve inside for winter really necessary?

instructions in pool school say to store pump and multiport valve inside for winter. Is this really necessary? my pump and sandfilter are hard plumbed so that will make that difficult as I would have to cut the pipe. If I drain the pump and sandfilter, blow all the water out of the lines...

    Swimming at shock level.....

I know the consensus is that its safe to swim up to shock level. Does that mean if my shock level is 17, i can swim at 17, and just not at 18+? also, what would happen if you swam at over shock level? Chlorine will just dry out your skin or what?

New contruction - temporary fake grass question

i can tell you now, grass clippings after mowing is going to happen regardless, unless you have no grass within about 50 feet of the pool and/or no wind. My ABG pool is 35 inches high and even aiming my lawn tractor shoot away from the pool, I still have to kick my pump on high for about 30-45...

New contruction - temporary fake grass question

I would look into some gravel and stepping stones rather than "fake grass." Sounds like a mess waiting to happen to me. If you are building a deck over the area next year, id go gravel, then you just build your deck over it. something else you may look into is some sod. put it around your...

    No CC while SLAMming?

interesting. but I can smell the pool too, even 10 ft away during SLAM. Im with Waldog, I thought CC was the byproduct of chlorine combining with whatever organics is in the pool and breaking it down. So it should be present....unless..... the FC being at shock level is so potent it also...

    No CC while SLAMming?

both times now that I have performed the SLAM process, I have gotten 0 ppm CC when I test. I can smell it. Even on my hand and arm after taking a sample. Its pretty strong. So how is it that it tests at 0 ppm during a SLAM. If ever was CC to be present, im thinking it would be during SLAM...

Pool water just seems to lack luster.....

theories are forming.... Since I know the method works.... and I know I have been testing and chlorinating like ive been "trained" ;), the only answer to my problem is im not chlorinating enough. Theory #1 - Im off on my calculation of gallons for this pool (figured at 20k) which was hard to...

Pool water just seems to lack luster.....

I thought the recommendation on here was to backwash when it gets 1 psi over normal? havent heard of backwashing too much until now. as far as someone dragging in dirt..... well... yeah. i have toddlers. they are dirt/organic.... :p pool is already back to crystal clear. whatever it...

Pool water just seems to lack luster.....

sigh............. im SLAMMING...... again..... :( after bringing it to shock level, the pool turned ugly, nasty dull brown down deep, and dead algae started forming on the floor. It consumed 4 ppm of FC in one hour. I have the Barracuda in it now, vaccuming it up, pump going full bore...

sorry, forgot to post it. zero CC as tested this morning. - - - Updated - - - yeah, we are not swimming today, so I went ahead and brought it up to SLAM level. Ill keep it there, and do an OCLT test tonight. Im gonna run pump non stop on high til tomorrow morning. - - - Updated - - -...

Pool water just seems to lack luster.....

so what you are saying is my water is dirty. by dirty meaning, it needs more filtration not chemical treatment? maybe im not running pump enough. right now it comes on (low speed) from 8 to 2 every day and then 8-10 in the evening. i think ill suck wind on the electric bill today and let...

Pool water just seems to lack luster.....

it was near 11 psi this morning, normally 10 so I did backwash since it was almost 1 psi over. A little dirt came out but not a whole lot. Pressure is 10 psi now. see how the center is blurry.. that is not the camera focus, that is what im talking about. pool just isnt sparkling. when you...
