    Regional Hard Water

This makes me feel better about my 450 reading in NW Houston. Our pool has a lot of historic scale and calcium buildup from previous owner neglect. My husband wants to try some Piranha gel, but we’ve decided to hold off because it would be difficult/impossible not to rinse it into the water...

    Thanks, it does. :-)

    Pool Name

We haven’t got creative with the pool (except to call it the concrete pond when we don’t want our toddler to know what we’’ are talking about). However, the Polaris is called “Jasper”

    Test kit refills

Anyone know where the best value refills can be found? Or is it a little early in the season? Amazon? Wait for spring sales? In SE Texas I’m starting to get back in to testing more regularly... but I ran out of a few things at the end of the season..... ...... don’t shoot me, but I have been...

    Prepping for the storm

Our pool is a greenish Color. The salt level is too low (we've been pumping out water for almost 2 days) so the SWG is useless. We've added bleach bleach bleach (MA and Calcium). But we need salt and calcium to balance.... and probably more bleach. But we have 2ft of floodwaters at the end of...

    Prepping for the storm

Ok wise, all-knowledgable folks. Everyone's talking about this fella called Harvey who's going to throw some wind and water at Houston. Are there any steps I need to take to prep the pool for the onslaught? The deck is already clear of anything that moves. Thanks from a soggy NW Houston Em

    Algae at and above waterline

Already agree... maybe the pool design was good at the time, but it hasn't stood the test of time. And I definitely wouldn't keep rocks!

    Algae at and above waterline

Very porous Dang things also shed a lot of silt. We're planning to resurface our pool in a year or two. I'll be doing a LOT of research (on TFP) on what is long-lasting and reasonably priced!

    Algae at and above waterline

Thanks for all the replies. We've been pool owners (13+-yr-old pool) for 3 months and have no historical data. No pressure washer - it's on the list of "we want when we can afford". I thought it was moss-like and they're part of water features. I'll definitely try the bleach spray -...

    Algae at and above waterline

Using Taylor test kit. Results reflect 1gallon of 8.25 bleach poured over the rock. CC is 0 Pool water is perfectly clear. Yesterday's FC was 0.4. I had the SWCG turned off for 48 hours during this time accidentally - so I was pretty pleased that there was even SOME chlorine! Lol I haven't...

    Algae at and above waterline

We have a very soft, porous rock as part of our pool. It sheds sandy material that the Polaris cleans up nicely... but it's recently got really green with slimy algae. (Sorry no photo) I knew there was a problem when FC dropped. We literally poured the bleach into the pool over the green...

    Backwashing... what is it?

Hey! I just checked and we have a Pentair Clean and Clear Plus cartridge filter. The PSI reading is 18-30 for normal operating, and I'm at 18. Phew! From what I've read, keeping the pool clean and clear (with TFP's help, obviously), running the polaris, netting, and keeping skimmers clear, we...

    Backwashing... what is it?

So.... now that I've got my SWCG working and chemicals balanced, I'm starting to notice other terminologies that I don't understand. Backwashing and replenishing DE (diatamacious earth?) Is it something to do with the filter? What does it do, why do you do it.... and how? I have a pentair...

Salt water newbie in Houston - I thought this would be easy!

OK - So three weeks into owning a pool and I think I'm getting there. It looked gorgeous when we moved in, but as I mentioned above, the chemistry was all over the place. I've ditched the pool store, testing my own water with a Taylor kit, disconnected the communication wires at the pool...

    Already out of CYA reagent!

Hi I've been using my Taylor K-2006 kit with for about 10 days (maybe 5 tests in that time as I've been having trouble balancing and keeping chlorine) The kit came with 2x small bottles of CYA reagent and I'm already through one! I'm about to order a backup, but before I do, is there anything...

Salt water newbie in Houston - I thought this would be easy!

Hi Fingaling - we're not sure about the salt cell. A pool guy said it was set to 0% but our control panel was set to 60% so I suspect it's not been running for a while. The pool chemistry is getting better. It's been neglected for a while and we were surprised it looked so good when the numbers...

Salt water newbie in Houston - I thought this would be easy!

OK So I got my new Taylor test kit! I'm very excited. It took me a while to work my way around it, but here are my results. FC 0.0 ppm TC 0.0 ppm T.Alk 130 ppm pH 8.0 TH 400 ppm CYA 65 ppm Temp 85F = Saturation index 0.9 (I think) Working with the chemicals I have please, could...

Salt water newbie in Houston - I thought this would be easy!

Awesome response, thank you. The results I gave were from test strips, but I absolutely agree - I don't want to rely on stores to advise me for those very reasons. I haven't seen anything that digitally indicates salt-low levels. I'm determined to self-manage. I've already taken apart the...

Salt water newbie in Houston - I thought this would be easy!

Hi everyone from a very hot and humid Houston, where a pool sounds such a great idea! Background: we just bought a 15-yr old house with a 13-yr old pool that was converted to saltwater at some point with a Jandy pro series. It is an inground, 20,000-25,000 gallon pool with spa, slide, small...
