    Inconsistent salt results...help!

Several issues here: Salt does not cause scaling; calcium does. If the pool store told you that you should ditch them. Are you reporting salt in parts per thousand? We usually talk in ppm. A cell at the end of its life will start reporting low salt, as will a cell with scaling. You haven't...

Trying to make a decision on SWG

Yea it's awful. Several years of minimal intervention perfect pool. Who would want that? I know exactly what levels I need and what tests provide reliable numbers. I am not sure what point you are trying to make with this chicken little sky is falling bs. The whole point of TFP is reliable...

Trying to make a decision on SWG

False equivalency. A gallon per month of acid vs a gallon per day of chlorine.

Trying to make a decision on SWG

What article? It is impossible to refute some phantom article. Yes. Total BS. No. An SWG is better since it provides a more constant level of FC. This allows you to use a lower target FC since you don't have the daily fluctuations and you never accidentally forget to add chlorine.

    Salt Water Generator

I have had a SWG for 4 years now and I consider it the closest thing to an actually trouble free pool. You mention reading more negative then positives, but don't mention anything specific. An SWG provides consistent FC level with a minimum (not zero), of intervention and attention. Many people...

    time to replace?

Pretty sure that is a varistor (voltage dependant resistor) which may be used for inrush current limiting. If you can read the codes off it you should be able to replace it (eBay or digikey would be my first stops).

Considering buying and stalling SW system / questions

I have said this in other threads, but I think people undervalue their own time. If you factor in some $$$ to "pay" yourself for lugging bleach I think you will come out ahead with an SWG. Not to mention the stress relief when you go on vacation.

    Does an SWG produce air?

Whenever I am near the pool and I see those bubbles, I shout "BUBBLES! BUBBLES!" ala the Stephen Root character from Finding Nemo.

    Does an SWG produce air?

Bubbles in the returns when the SWG is producing is normal. It is a byproduct of chlorine production. Hydrogen gas if I am not mistaken.

    AQUA RITE SWG Gone Crazy

You had algae or some other organics in the water that the SWG could not get ahead of. You were lucky that your single dose of shock (instead of a true SLAM) fixed it. Now the FC demand is back to normal the SWG is producing more than is consumed. Slowly lower percentage and/or run time until...

Considering buying and stalling SW system / questions

The Intex SWG has been used by members here and is well respected. Some of the intex units have copper bars, which you should remove or at least unplug. I think it has a regular 110v plug, so it may just be as simple as plugging it in.

    High salt level

It's kinda hard to follow your story here. It sounds like the storm is irrelevant since you had salt in range and SWG working after the storm. Is the 44,000 a typo? Did you mean 4400? It sound like your cell may be dead. How old is it and what sort of run times has it experienced (hours per...

New pool owner; SWG; TA VERY HIGH (280); ph HIGH 8.2, DID POOL MATH, ?'S

Robbie, I think you may have let your fingers get in front of your brain here. TA buffers pH to keep pH more stable, but high TA plus aeration equals pH rise.

Did the PB size my SWG correctly?

Yes, that is dichlor which raises CYA. You can use the "effects of adding chemicals" section of pool math to determine how much.

Post removed: I just realized you have a VS pump, and my post was relevant only to 2 speed pumps.

    Change to Salt or no??

Check out PoolMath. Good for determining all your chemical additions, including salt. Also check out Water Balance for SWGs. You can add salt at any time. It doesn't affect other chemicals and adds a nice silky water feel. By the way I used to live in RI (Newport and Portsmouth), and dated...

    Change to Salt or no??

There should be no reason to "loose" (sic) your chemistry. You can add salt up to manufacture recommendation at any time. This will not affect anything else. When you are ready to turn on the SWG, add CYA to bump up to 60 -70. That's it. Of course this all assumes that you are maintaining...

    SWG and Two Speed Pumps

I think the b2981 (CSCR low speed) is a better motor than the B973 (PSC high and low). The SF Amps on the b2981 is less than half that of the B973 for low speed. I believe this means that you will realize more savings with the b2981, and they are no more expensive online.

    SWG and Two Speed Pumps

Can't speak to motors with built in timers. I installed a similar motor (b2980) along with a TightWatt2 controller. You have to run one extra conductor to the pump for the low speed. Make sure you match the gauge of the existing wire. I connected my SWG in parallel with the low side of the...

Pool Pilot Digital Nano - Year 4 - Top Marks

Josh, I didn't buy the Nano from you...I don't think I knew who you were at the time, but I will definitely buy from you in the future. I am thinking about getting a replacement cell to put in the shelf. I have read that 4 to 7 years is normal life expectancy, so it's probably wise to have one...

Pool Pilot Digital Nano - Year 4 - Top Marks

I think I was the first member on TFP to get the Pool Pilot Digital Nano. Installed on July 31, 2010, it is less than 2 months shy of its 4th birthday. I haven't seen a ton of chatter here about the Nano, but I have seen a few vague complaints. The problem with looking to the internet for...

    Aftermarket Salt Cells

MITS is probably right and I hate to be alarmist. The post I referenced came up right after I installed my SWG and it stuck with me. I am sure a well made after market cell from a reputable manufacture would be fine. How do you determine if an after market cell is well made? Not sure...

    Aftermarket Salt Cells

Here is an example of a "problem" someone had with an aftermarket cell. autopilot-cell-shorted-out-t25953.html#p214332 I am sure Poolsean wouldn't recommend it for an Autopilot system.

    Aqua Rite reading 1200

I agree...get some strips (salt strips are ok...all other strips are useless). If the cell is reporting wrong (which I would assume) and you keep adding salt, the only way to lower it later is by draining.

    SWG size matters?

The way the the % works is it cycles on and off like a microwave oven, not lowering the wattage. I doubt you will save electricity going to the larger cell, but the cell will last longer. The only real problem with going too big is that you lose granularity of control. Imagine that you are...

    Temperature Compensation Algorithm?
