    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Dtrav, good luck with it. The metal stains were something I battled for close to 7 years. In hindsight, I should have done it long ago. The good news is that my liner and fittings are still stain free. If I remember correctly, I did the water replacement after the July 4th weekend so it’s...

Pool is very cloudy at wits end

Have you checked your filter to make sure it’s clean and/or working properly?

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

When the pool was built the salt was added by the builder. I can’t remember what brand he used but his pool store sold AquaSalt. Over the years I mostly used AquaSalt but remember using Morton pool salt and maybe even the dreaded Clorox brand once.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Quick update to say there is no hint of metal stains after replacing the water. It’s been a full month since the water was replaced. I should have done this years ago. Iron stains started 7 years ago. The past 3 years were the worst. 3 years of having to add Metal Magic weekly only to see...

    Calcium Hardness Problems

There’s no way your test is accurate. That’s over 350 lbs of calcium chloride in a 20k gallon pool. According to pool math calculator, adding that much calcium chloride to a 20k gallon pool should raise your calcium hardness by 1909!!

My local Leslies does not carry these, only the case of 4 128oz jugs.

What Now? White Cloud After Addition of Chlorine

Yes, sorry. I only did that in the video to make it easier to collect the cloudy water. I normally add the chlorine directly to the pool water.

Can’t get chlorine up in pool after balancing pool levels?

I prefer the liquid chlorine that is 10% to 12% concentration so I don't have to carry as much when I buy it. But you can also get regular "bleach" as long as it has no other additives (anti splash, or scented, etc) but it usually comes in 6 to 7.5% concentration...

Can’t get chlorine up in pool after balancing pool levels?

Yes, you can add some stabilizer while using your tabs. But to Chris' point, tabs are going to eventually backfire on you because the stabilizer levels will keep building and building until they are too high. I would use tabs until your stabilizer level gets to around 50 or so and then...

What Now? White Cloud After Addition of Chlorine

I have had this happen with my pool. I was never able to figure out what causes it. It was almost like calcium precipitating but my calcium has never been higher than 200 so it doesn't make sense. A couple years ago, I was having this problem after adding Metal Magic and having calcium in the...

Can’t get chlorine up in pool after balancing pool levels?

You may want to add some stabilizer to bring the level to 20 or 30 and add liquid chlorine. Then your tablets may be able to keep up. Keep in mind, the tablets will eventually raise your stabilizer level past the recommended range but that's another topic.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

I believe once or twice I may have used Clorox brand salt but from then on, I only used Aqua Pure salt. But I guess the damage may have been done. Honestly, I’ve never really figured out where the iron came from. It’s part of the reason I keep thinking it may come back. All my previous...

I do not. I just manually add water when needed.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Ok. My city water does not appear to have iron in it as tested by me, tested by pool stores and tested by an independent lab I sent water samples to. My next door neighbor has a liner pool as well and he’s never had the iron stains like I do and we’re obviously on the same city water. His pool...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

So the question I have is, did this fix your iron stain problem? I keep thinking any day I’ll see those dreaded stains come back. I think I have iron stain PTSD.

    Metal Stain -Copper

I know the general consensus here is that you don't need CH for vinyl pools but you have a pool heater and without any CH, the water LSI index can lean towards corrosive water which can cause problems with your heater if it has a copper exchanger and you have no way to bypass it. Using the pool...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Far too early to claim victory over the metal stains but the water is perfectly balanced and so far, no hint of staining anywhere.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Did water test this morning. Chlorine is where I left it last night (3.5 ppm), CYA still close to zero so I added more CYA to bring it up to around 20 for now, retest and add more to land between 30 and 40. I forgot to mention that for the first time in years, I was able to do the CH test...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

It appears that my water replacement replaced most of the water. My CYA dropped from 60 to zero. My pH, hardness, and alkalinity match what my tap water tested at. pH: 7.8 CH: 20 Alk: 20 I'm also already able to hold chlorine @ 2.5 ppm (keeping it a little low for now) and I had done a...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Hi Maddie, the source of my metals has proven to be quite the mystery. My neighbor with same source water as me has no such issues with his 10 year old pool. My other neighbor, however, did have the problem until his liner was replaced and all his water got replaced as expected. Between his...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

I immediately thought about your prophetic post about not draining all the way. For real, I was panic-stricken when I pulled on that tarp and it did not budge a millimeter. It was like it was super-glued to the liner. I was picturing myself in scuba gear carefully cutting the tarp without...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Well guys, I have good news and almost bad news. In the interest of transparency for any that come across this post in the future. As you know, I was thinking that because my sump pump was not at the bottom of the deep end, it would quit sucking water at some point. I did not take into...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Good point about some AA being left and consuming chlorine when I start to re-balance the water. There will be some residual Polyquat-60 since I added around 30 ounces during the AA treatment but it will be heavily diluted.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Yes, that was the plan after a serious AA treatment (4.5lbs of AA). Wanted to make sure all staining in plumbing, etc would lift before draining everything. I guess first order of business will be to test water and add CYA and liquid chlorine. Then work on alkalinity/pH and finally some...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Thanks for the suggestion. I will have to stop with about 1.5-2ft in the deep end because the sump pump power cord did not allow me to have it at the very bottom. The rope holding the sump pump has it suspended against the wall but well off the bottom.

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Tarp water replacement is still progressing as expected. I've added some tarp clips and paracord that will stretch and allow the tarp to slide just past the coping but keep it from falling in the water. The tarp is already resting on the bottom of the shallow end and is about 65 inches from...

    Tarp method in-place water replacement

Yes I’m aware that it’s not as large a tarp as I would have liked. It’s the biggest one I could source locally and it wasn’t cheap. The plan was to minimize the wasting of new water if I let it mix with the old right away as has been the case with multiple drain and refill cycles. As it is, the...
