    Borates Spike?

I went with the recommended strips in one of the forum posts.

    Borates Spike?

Yesterday in Pittsburgh we had some extremely heavy rain and storms. My swg pool is a disaster this morning, with a lot of leaves and sticks. I had to drain some water out because the rain filled the pool to the coping (probably about 4"). This morning, ph is 7.8, salt level dropped 200 ppm...

    Liquid Chlorine Shortage in Pittsburgh

There's a Maynard's in Wheeling??? I never knew! I have family in Wheeling, so perfect excuse to drop by!

    Liquid Chlorine Shortage in Pittsburgh

Apparently, TFP has caught on in Pittsburgh. There's plenty of tablets to be had, but no liquid chlorine. I had to resort to using Giant Eagle 7.13% bleach to get through this weekend. Got me thinking of a SWG conversion. Seems easy enough.

SLAMMING, MA, and verifying CYA levels

Probably. OCLT loss of 2.5 this morning. The SLAM goes on.

SLAMMING, MA, and verifying CYA levels

    1) Verifying CYA: I recently found a CYA chart here that shows how much FC is lost in full sun given various CYA levels. I know that testing CYA is a bit of an art, so I was able to verify my CYA reading with the chart. I read 30 for CYA, and the FC loss during the sunny, clear day last week...

    SLAMming a clear pool

I'm down to my normal chlorine level, and it's maintaining with no additions. I haven't added chlorine all week. After the last filter cleaning, my filter pressure has been lower than it has been all SLAM (even though it was cleaned several times during the slam). I think the SLAM made my...

    TF-100 Chlorine Cylinder Losing Markings?

Same thing happened to mine. I actually used a nail to scratch the 10 ml line in mine. I thought sharpie would wear off over time.

    SLAMming a clear pool

I have officially ended my SLAM on Labor Day (9/7) after I met all the criteria. A final brush, vacuum, and filter cleaning (see post above) marked the occasion. The chlorine levels are slowly coming down. I haven't had to add chlorine in 3 days.

    SLAMming a clear pool

Is the light gray water pouring off my filter dead algae? If so, there's a lot of it.

    SLAMming a clear pool

Last night I had an FC drop of 0, but a CC increase of 0.5 from 1 to 1.5. I guess that falls within the margin of error, but with a CC of 1.5 it seems I'm still killing something. The plan today is to wash down my cartridge filters after a brush and vacuum.

Thanks. Perhaps this "super slam" is the finishing move I need. :)

    SLAMming a clear pool

Well, that was fun while it lasted. I'm super duper chlorinating at the MA level, and got a 2.5 FC loss last night, and a CC of 1.5 this morning. It stormed a bit last night, and I ended up with another inch of water and a few leaves in the pool, but that shouldn't affect chlorine levels...

    SLAMming a clear pool

Today is an exciting day for me, TFPers. Today I end my SLAM. Last night I had a drop of 1 ppm and my CC is 0.5. I believe I had a mustard algae problem, so today I am following the mustard algae slam process, and super duper chlorinating for 24 hours, according to this chart: Chlorine/CYA...

    CYA measurement

I guess that's the key. If I can see it at 50 and not at 30, I'm in the acceptable range. Maybe being exact doesn't matter that much if it's within the acceptable range. Same with 80-100. That range is high, and being exact doesn't matter as much. The method to bring it down is still the...

    CYA measurement

I was mixing it, letting it sit for 30 sec, mixing it again, letting it sit for 30 sec, and then testing. In any event, my pool water measured at 100, according to the sample dot. The dot completely disappeared at 80. Either way, that's high. I'm going to do a partial drain and refill.

    CYA measurement

Ok, but clearly the black dot is still visible. So, really, without training your eye with a standard first, CYA could be very inaccurate. Since chlorine levels are based on this, it seems pretty important to get right.

I followed the instructions, but the lighting was evening light. I'll try again today with bright sun.

    SLAMming a clear pool

After an overcast day yesterday and some rain the day before, my FC level only dropped 2 overnight last night, but my CC increased 1.5. I will say, though, the pool looks brighter than ever, sparkling and clear this morning. I plan to brush, scrub down hidden areas, vacuum, and clean the filter...

    CYA measurement

I purchased the 50ppm cya standard from tftest. When I mix the standard with the new 0013 I also purchased, as directed, I can still see the dot when measuring at waist level.

    SLAMming a clear pool

Drop of 3 for the OCLT last night, and the "staining" is fading even more. It is amazing that it does not come up brushing with a steel brush, but after I brush, vacuum, and add sanitizer to SLAM levels, the next day I notice a difference. This must have been a long standing problem I never...

    SLAMming a clear pool

Increased SLAM yesterday with higher levels. OCLT loss of 3, but the pool is looking even better than before. The kids used the pool yesterday, and it clouded sightly. Did a thorough stainless steel brush and vac last evening before increasing sanitizer to 31 ppm. Lots of white and gray...

    SLAMming a clear pool

Thanks. I actually think it was an error with the initial test. I just retested 3 times and then did the 50/50 tap water to pool water CYA test , and all tests came out to a cya of 80. This may explain why the water looked a little cloudy after my family and I spent most of yesterday in it.

    SLAMming a clear pool

Before the SLAM, I had a CYA of 50. Using only liquid bleach for the SLAM, my cya is now 80. Can I trust a cya measurement when slamming? Do I need to drain some water and refill?

    SLAMming a clear pool

Another OCLT loss of 4 this morning. Just acid washed the filter cartridges. That was no fun, but the acid water was really nasty. Grayish, brownish milky waste water. The back pressure in my filter dropped about 30%.

    SLAMming a clear pool

Thanks. This past weekend I cleaned the cartridge and scrubbed the housing. I was amazed at how dirty the housing was.

    SLAMming a clear pool

FC loss of 5 overnight. Still going. I cleaned behind the light, which was still clean from the last time I cleaned it, and under the main drain cover, which was dirty and full of dead algae (it's plugged, and non-functional). The cart. filter was cleaned this past weekend. Wondering if it...

    SLAMming a clear pool

Was hoping to end the SLAM today, but had an OCLT of 3 last night... And so it goes. Yesterday was a very windy, rainy day, though, and a lot of leaves blew nto the pool. I really believe I'm dealing with a long established mustard algae problem. I thought I had iron staining in my pool. The...
