Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! *PICS THREAD*

Looking much better today. I’ll keep the chlorine level up for a couple days as I get some other things taken care of. Next step is to get the SWG working. Water temp is 61 degrees so I think it’s in range to work but it says it’s low on salt. So, probably put in some salt tomorrow after I...

    Opening Steps

Interesting situation. I started the SLAM yesterday but I was too tired to vacuum the pool. I put two gallons in the pool of 12.5% with a 40 cya and it got up to 16 no problem. Water cleared up and because I had brushed, the sides looked good. Figured I'd resume the SLAM today and vacuum the...

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! *PICS THREAD*

Good point. I use a mesh safety cover. Water gets in the pool while it’s on.

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! *PICS THREAD*

It’s late if you want the water to be crystal clear when you open. It’s too early to swim, but I’ll heat up the water and we’ll be in it around mid May.

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! *PICS THREAD*

No, I don’t close early. First batch of chlorine and it’s already doing better. It will be hard to start a proper SLAM this evening, but I’ll hit it hard tomorrow and it should be fine by the end of the weekend. It may not pass the chlorine loss test but I’m sure it will look good by then.

    Opening Steps

What do I do with my pool cover. It’s a mesh safety cover and as we removed it, it got dragged through some algae. Is that an issue? Obviously it will be bone dry by the time we put it back on in the fall. Will the algae reconstitute?

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! *PICS THREAD*

Opened later than last year and had some warm weather in March. First time the pool has been this green since the first fill a few years ago. Oh well. Shouldn't be too bad to get it in shape.

    Opening Steps

Is there a set set of steps for opening a pool? In my case a green pool? For example: Drain water to proper level Start filter Test water Slam Vacuum/brush I don’t want to make extra work for myself or use unnecessary amounts of chemicals by doing things in the wrong order. My nature is...

help! my pool cover came off a little...

OP - You're in good hands, these guys know what they're doing. Listen to them and you'll do fine. FWIW, I've done a couple slams and it's not hard at all. As for opening, I live in S.E. MI and would not bother opening before May 1st. You'll have plenty of time to clear up the water before...

    Pipe sealant.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I was wrapping the tape wrong. I know to do it the right way but I might have messed up. Anyway, I taped it today and it seemed to work fine. Had some other issues closing the pool, but it’s done and that’s the end of the season. Now I just have to wait for the...

I think I’m winding it the right way but I’ll make sure.

    Pipe sealant.

About ready to close and have a question. I blow out my pipes through my skimmer. I use a pipe and screw it into the intake hole at the bottom of the skimmer. In previous years I’ve used Teflon tape around the threads. I’m wondering if there is a better product to use to seal that connection...

    Cyclone pool blower

As shown in your picture, I have found that you need hose clamps. The Cyclone puts out a lot of pressure and without the clamps, you need to hold the hose on to keep it from flying off. Better to use clamps for hand free operation.

    Water Level at Closing

I have a Latham mesh safety cover. I cannot find the recommended water level is at closing. I know I’m not supposed to drain too much because the water is support for the cover if there is a lot of snow. I thought I found the recommended level earlier this year, but now I can’t find it. Any...

    Opened pool today.

Today I got everything uncapped and got the motor/skimmer working. It’s nice when everything works. Just a bunch of steps to get everything back on line but no problems. Also did a lot of brushing. I’ll vacuum tomorrow and start balancing the chemicals. Too bad it won’t be warm next week...

    Opened pool today.

Opened today. Haven’t vacuumed yet, but got the cover off and am draining some water. The water height got pretty close to coping over winter but stayed under. A little disappointing that I have a small amount of algae. I don’t understand why since I still had chlorine in the water. Also, not...

Adding chlorine to a closed pool

One goal was more about getting rid of the chlorine so I didn’t have to store it over winter. However, I did close last year at slam level and did have some algae when I opened this year. Nothing serious, but apparently, the chlorine didn’t last the entire winter.

Adding chlorine to a closed pool

Using the robot is a good idea, however, all that stuff is put away. If it takes all that to add chlorine now, then your first advice is probably better - closed is closed. Thanks.

Adding chlorine to a closed pool

We had a very nice warm fall so far but tomorrow the bottom drops out and it gets cold here. I have some chlorine left over (two gallons) that I was thinking of adding to the pool which I closed about a month ago at slam level. Probably over kill, but I figured a little extra won’t hurt...

    Closed Today

Used a couple new products today. Bungee Plugs - If these hold they will be great. Last year I hooked up the Cyclone and after all the returns were bubbling, I called them off with a plug. I had to reach down into the water, while the air was blowing out and the pool water was being churned...

My compressor gave out and thinking about buying a Cyclone

Not sure this will convince anyone, but the Cyclone is just the right tool for the job. Compressors just don’t throw out the volume of air that a Cyclone does. I’m not sure how a compressor works in a pool, but in a sprinkler system, they don’t have the volume of air to push out all the water...

    Can I save chlorine?

In Michigan it will certainly be below freezing. There’s been years where it probably didn’t get into single digits, but mid winter, it’s not uncommon. Then, of course, there’s been brutal winters where it gets below zero. So one never knows.

    Can I save chlorine?

I have 4 gallons left and am wondering the same thing. Thinking I should just dump it in but I seem to recall that it wouldn’t help get me through the winter. Something about the chlorine being that high it would just dissipate that much quicker. However, I’m not bringing it in my house so if...

My compressor gave out and thinking about buying a Cyclone

I bought a Cyclone too. Watched the PB do it year one and did it myself year two (this will be year three coming up). He used a Cyclone so I went ahead and bought one. It cost some money, but my thought is that it doesn’t cost as much as having it done so I’m ahead and I own good equipment...

    Old Chlorine

Thanks. I’ll dump them and Get more if needed. I probably won’t as I’m going to put the safety cover on while the water cools down and leave the pump running for a few weeks with the SWG on. That will bring the chlorine up enough that the liquid may not even be needed, but I’ll throw some in...

    Old Chlorine

At the beginning of the season (around May) I bought 2 cases of chlorine and only used 1 so I have four gallons left from then to use to close my pool. Question I have is, does chlorine degrade over that amount of time? If so, does it just get weak, or does something else happen? If it just...

    Capping off the jets.

Question - Would you put a Bungee Plug on each return? Or, just put it on the last return in the line. I have three returns. Then, if I only use one Bungee Plug, would I cap off the other two first? Or, start the air blowing and cap the first two (like I did last year - cap while the air is...

    Capping off the jets.

Given that I’m not paying someone to close my pool, I think it’s worth getting it even just to try it out. I’ll still use the Gizmo just to be safe. With those plugs, the skimmer seal and a Gizmo, I’m still under $150. Way less than paying someone to do it. Last year my ”savings” went into...

    Capping off the jets.

So I looked up the Bungee plug and they have something called a Skim Lock. Skim Lock Have you ever used that? I’m thinking of still using a blow through Gizmo but using the skim lock as an added precaution.
