Air bubble in pump lid normal?

The hose method works great. In my case my leak was a kinked gasket ring where the pump basket attaches to the pvc line.

voltage reading 3.2 to 3.5 all around the pool

There was a guy on this forum, I think he was an electrician/pool installer, who claimed that this was occasionally caused by a naturally occurring electrical field in the earth. Said he measured a case he couldn't figure out in the power outage in 2003, right in the affected area (here in the...

New pump or motor replacement: decision time

No it definitely is beneficial. For somewhere where they run the filter 12 months a year it probably makes more sense. Here in the Northeast it's basically 3 months a year.

New pump or motor replacement: decision time

It's up to you. I don't find anything beneficial to them personally, at least not worth the price. You don't even need to run the pump that much. Just follow the BBB method. When my motor was on the fritz I bought a new one on Amazon for $150 and haven't regretted it one bit.

    Air in return

Air in returns: I solved this issue using the garden hose method. Turn a garden hose on halfway and hold it over every joint in your "suction side" (pre pump impeller) plumbing and all over your baskets. Take care not to get an water on the pump motor. The bubbles will stop when you have hit the...

Pool level didn't change whatsoever overnight. I think I'm in the clear!

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

I'm a little OCD, so will be redoing the bucket test to make sure I've gotten all leaks. However I was very pleased at the pool level this morning after filling and running filter all night. Do not want to prematurely declare victory.

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

This is my diverter: http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server3600/76ee1/products/4203/images/25021/L1938__19566.1452961922.1280.1280.jpg I think it's exactly right that it was bypassed for that reason. Is there a diverter that allows a vacuum line? Otherwise the main drain does nothing.

Hayward 1 HP Super Pump burning out.. replace motor, replace pump, other?

I don't get what the big deal is with variable speed. I got the cheapo 1 speed. I run it for 4 hours every night. Keeps my pool clean. When people are swimming I keep it running. Otherwise it's off. I honestly think I may run it too much, I could probably get away with 3 hours a night.

Hayward 1 HP Super Pump burning out.. replace motor, replace pump, other?

I have the same motor, it was unbearable loud. I just replaced the whole thing. New pump motor cost about $100 on Amazon and was well worth it.

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

Update: I believe I have found the leak, it was where the skimmer attached to the concrete, where nearly everyone with a slow leaking gunite pool has a leak. I just couldn't see it with food coloring. Just bought the pool putty stuff. If anyone is searching for a slow leak in gunite pool: let it...

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

I bought a snorkle kit online, should be arriving in a few days. The bottom main drain has leaves in it to be honest. I have tested it previously and never gotten suction (by pushing leaves towards it) without installing this diverter valve that the previous homeowner left. When the snorkle...

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

CNJ that is exactly what I have. I have no gotten any food coloring to suck into anything, without the pump being on. What I have heard though in searching on these forums is that food coloring is completely ineffective and will just disappear with any movement of the water, something I can...

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

Thanks for your reply, CNJ. THe MD is a pipe that is connected to the skimmer basket only, without a diverter valve there is no suction at it whatsoever. I do not use this valve usually. My house is at the top of a hill and I have never had any dug hole ever fill with water. My basement has...

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

I tested the GFI break on the pool light last month. Breaker trips. When untripped light works great. I Have never inspected the hydrostatic plug on the MD and have no idea when it was replaced. I do not use the main drain but it is "open".

Idea for testing leaks at bottom of pool

My pool has the dreaded slow leak, I failed a bucket test this weekend, however there was rain, so performing one right now. It has already partially failed. I have checked all the suspects. Skimmer, returns, some cracks, light opening. I want to check my main drain bottom. My idea was to...

I would bond it. It needs to be bonded to a ground rod driven into the ground or something conductive that goes into the ground.

Do I need to replace the whole pump assembly or just the motor?

I had an aggravatingly loud pump, so I just replaced the pump motor for $150. I had a Hayward super pump 3/4 hp.

Eh, you can replace the bearing or just replace the whole motor. It cost me about $150 total. Of course, my pump was severely corroded (and loud!).

    Pump will not prime

I have had this happen many times. It's always been the pump basket assembly for me: 1) The pump basket assembly wasn't far enough into the skimmer intake line. Same exact symptoms as you 2) o-rings where pipes connect to each other. One time it was kinked up and sticking out of the pipe. Same...

    Pump won't fully prime

Yes I apologize for not being more clear. This year when I opened the pool, I sprayed all the connections, especially those with rubber seals, with WD-40, before attaching everything. Seemed to work good, the pump primed on the first try this year. Never had it do it that easy before.
