new(ish) sand filter returning fine debris to pool

Yes, backwashing removes DE. You repeat the process aiming for a 1 psi increase.

Is it normal to never have to Backwash?

No, that is a pool store myth. If you keep your chlorine good, there is no need to do it on a regular schedule. From the article on SLAM:

Is it normal to never have to Backwash?

Woah, back up there. Why do you "shock" the pool every month? There is no need to shock on a regular schedule if you keep the chlorine at the proper level. What product do you use to shock, or do you use the SWG?

    Cartridge Filters

Didn't know that. I might get a new cartridge next year anyway, so I will start cleaning that one less often. When I first open the pool, I have to add a lot of well water, which adds a lot of iron. So I clean the filters every few days until all of the iron is filtered out. Then I go to about...

    Continually Rising Pressure

We don't use the word shock around here, because it doesn't help solve problems. Around here, we SLAM - Shock Level and Maintain. It is a process, not a product. By far the best thing you can do is buy the recommended test kit and SLAM your pool. They are both linked in my signature. Oh, and...

    Cartridge Filters

I clean my cartridge way too often. I clean it probably every 2 weeks. I have never noticed an increase on the pressure gauge. But like was said, you should wait until you see a 25% pressure increase.

Did my dealer oversize the pump and filter?

Because I bought the pool long before I found this forum, and just took what Branch Brook sold me (well, actually my dad did.) And I see no reason to replace a pump that is currently working fine just to save a little on electricity. When the pump dies I will definitely get a smaller one speed...

Did my dealer oversize the pump and filter?

Pump is oversized, filter is good. See the charts in this thread. It is recommended to double the cartridge size listed, which would be 180-something sqft. According to this article, you shouldn't need more than a 1/2 hp pump, definitely not more than 3/4 hp. I don't have any experience with...

Dirty pool + sand filter = no rise in pressure?

Backwash when the pressure rises 25% of its clean pressure.

    Hard plumbed my AGP

I'm going to have to do something about this leak, because, since adding ~2" of water over the past 2 days, the pool is starting to turn green (not algae, it's iron). I'm also probably going to be using A LOT of Borax to keep my pH in line. I'm trying to do the bucket test, but I am going to...

    Hard plumbed my AGP

That's the hose that goes to my DIY heater. Here is the full heater setup: thanks-to-bbb-my-pool-looks-like-this-t51476.html?hilit=heater

    Hard plumbed my AGP

Those are support pipes. Keep some weight off of the fittings. I'm planning on doing the bucket test, and I know the perfect bucket. I just have to stop being lazy and clean it off.

    Hard plumbed my AGP

So this is my 600th post, and I decided to make it something special. I will show you my hard plumbing on my pool. My dad gets all of the credit for this, because it was his idea and he did all of the work. Enjoy. One question for you, I think I may have a leak. Does a 1" water loss in 24 hours...

    Switch to cartridge filter?

I have a cartridge filter and would never have anything else.I don't have any experience with sand, nor do want to. I have well water with a high iron content, so the limited water use is another plus.

    Question for Cartridge Filter Owners

Count me as another vote for Pleatco. I have a second filter, but I could live without it. I guess it depends on how much a second filter would cost you, and how often you will need to clean it.
