Water still cloudy after following all the rules

We just went through this. I am a newbie. We inherited an old pool, filter, pump etc when we bought our new home. I could not get the completely clear water, despite lots of slamming. We decided to open the filter because some sand was getting into the pool. It turned out we had a broken...

Black Algae in my pool (one month after SLAM and following TFP)?

Don't forget stairs/ladders. I found a bunch inside my ladders. We left them on the floor of the pool opened up, completely taken apart with all the stairs, etc taken off during the slam. I did a super slam first by using a bleach rinse and we threw them in. It helped get me over the hump.

    Mustard Hater

I thought I had the dreaded scourge as well. It turned out not to be the case, but I share your misery as I slammed, scrubbed, washed, wiped, everything in sight for weeks. It made me completely neurotic! May the bleach gods shine down on you and help you squelch the demon. lol

    New build in South Texas

Wow, just jumping in, what an incredible design. Drool, complete and utter, drool! The lighting is gorgeous. I stayed at a fantastic yacht club in Acapulco, the Club de Yachtes, years ago. It had incredible stone and palms and a retro feel throughout. Your place takes me back there!

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thanks Beens and Kim! Kim, pressure washing and painting and weeding really did huge things. I splurged for the double chaise for my birthday and the yellow chairs were a housewarming gift to me from myself. lol I really have NO MORE MONEY, so it will be sweat and raw hands for a while!

Ugly Duckling Pool Reno in Maine

Thank you for the well wishes folks! Here it is today, still a work in progress. I am doing the landscaping myself. The other end is looking really rough under the deck, the old gate on the street side, the fence there, the peeling gray paint on the garage. We have just so much to do, but I...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thanks Kim! Here's my under construction thread. We have painted and I just installed a gate behind the diving board end. Lot's more gardening, but it has come a long way just since April. :) The photo there is from 3 years ago, when the house was abandoned and the pool was in it's dormant...

    Greetings from Swampville!

It is still in the dish, with no change! Definitely must have been dead stuff that either was a remnant from the old return line or was too small and sneaking through. We now only have small amounts of pollen and a few leaves/bugs! I have still not added chlorine. Our FC was 10.5 this am, so...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thank you for your sweet thoughts. We have a petri dish going, so that should tell us. It sure looks like dead grayish. Perhaps, leftover from the last cycle before we changed sand and cleaned the filter. Thanks again Kim! It's been 10 weeks since the pool company first started and I have...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thanks kimkats! My poor husband thought perhaps he broke the laterals or the standpipe fix did not hold up, but correct it is not the nice white sand we now have. Definitely not. I just started vacuuming to waste. Perhaps it is just tiny particles getting through the filter. I sent my son...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Please put me out of my misery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sand at the bottom is back. It is not there when the filter is off. It was off for 24 hours while we rebuilt it. The sand is a brownish color, we just put in new white sand. Our numbers are good, we have passed the 3 prong...

Water level in Pool above Skimmer

It was 2 am and I was half asleep. :) It strangely showed pressure on the backwash, which is why I let it run. It is possible that I misread the gauge when the filter was running. I was paranoid about the water height level. So it will only effect the skimming quality, but will not hurt...

Water level in Pool above Skimmer

I awoke to Hurricane Arthur's effects causing torrential rains and a precariously high level in our pool. I went to check the pump and the filter had no pressure. I quickly turned it off and went to backwash to drain some of the water. The psi went up to it's normal level. I am leaving the...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Yes, thanks, I should have clarified, that we could not find them locally and did not want to wait as it is a long weekend. We were afraid not to have the filter running for 4-7 days. Thanks so much though!

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thanks DM. We could not get the part for our old filter (new standpipe) so my husband got underwater epoxy putter to patch the holes. This was clearly the issue. It was so hard to tell if it was sand, algae, pollen, MA, etc. I just could not attempt the filter clean out without the help of...

    Greetings from Swampville!

So glad my husband is here. Took out all the sand, which is the WRONG kind of sand, and there are holes in the upright pvc pipe (the stand pipe?) that holds the laterals. Sand and junk is entering there and going back into the pool. It was very easy to vacuum up out the old sand. He is...

    Greetings from Swampville!

I am assuming I keep posting questions to my same thread. We continue to get a small amount of "dust, dirt, pollen, sand or algae" at the bottom of our sunny pool in some spots within an hour of vacuuming it up. We have been slamming since Monday morning. Numbers are Ph-7.4 TA-150 CH-250...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Thank you so much. Sadly no lights, but the "pool experts" "opened" our pool for $300. This included throwing in shock to our swamp and installing the ladders. WHY WOULD YOU INSTALL LADDERS INTO A SWAMP?????????? We took them completely apart and they are sitting at the bottom of the shallow...

    Greetings from Swampville!

Awoke this morning to more of the dang algae. It looked brownish. I had thought it was sand/dirt from the filter the last week or two. My husband helped me discern that it was ALGAE. We took the ladders out, even though I had inspected and washed them, many times. Well one of them had an...

Still fighting brownish dust in bottom of pool

Bumping this thread as I too am experiencing this brown "dirt" or "dust" and am unsure if it is algae, or pollen, or dead algae. This thread is very helpful if anyone else is also experiencing this problem.

    Greetings from Swampville!

Richard or someone mentioned DE early on. I forgot to try that. I am getting that in the morning. I am worried that perhaps they used the wrong kind of sand in our filter. Very curious to open that puppy up tomorrow and clean it and inspect the internal state of things. I have tried panty...

    Greetings from Swampville!

I LOVE your idea of the turkey baster. Very clever as there is no way to capture the stuff. Maybe it is dead algae, I suppose that is possible, but there was ALOT of it. I will try to post a picture in the morning. We are definitely planning to clean the filter tomorrow. I needed my...

    Greetings from Swampville!

I had to go away for a few days. FC was at 12, put in 2 pucks and was sure everything was groovy, except for the sand that was coming back in through the filter. We came back this evening to an entirely crystal clear pool, pucks were gone, and the entire bottom was covered in what I first...

Filter manual does say to change it every 5-7 years

No, no sales pitch. I am unfortunately a very trusting person and after too many years of getting burned, still believe in people's good intentions initially. Lol. Filtering through all the info can be confusing! But now that I am reading more, i see others have been confused by all the...

Filter manual does say to change it every 5-7 years

I am a pool newbie and do not have years of experience. I am just posting what the filter website says. Our filter is really old, and we need to inspect the laterals due to sand blowing back into our pool, so we have to change it anyway. I am not educated enough at this point to form a real...

Filter manual does say to change it every 5-7 years

Please no one yell at me, but my filter manual does say to change it every 5-7 years. I read that the sand can get worn down and more rounded and thus not as efficient. I do realize sand is as "old as the hills" but I could see the grains rounding from so much action. Having read the great...

Swampville no more! Another devoted believer of TFPC here! Passed all three criteria following my SLAM and hooray!, the kids finally had a beautiful swim this afternoon. Friends are coming tomorrow to join us for a romp in the splashy sparkly crystal clear H20. I will be sure to post a...
