    Deck extension over pool rail

Sorry for the late reply. This is what I ended up using. I used 1 every 2-3 feet and they have held up great. I weigh around 230lbs and when I step on the boards that are attached to these hanging over the pool rail I don't feel any kinda movement. They are very solid. I decided to go this...

    Motor to filter hose change

Thanks! I ended up using a small propane torch to carefully heat up the ends and they slipped on like butter. I bet the hot water trick would work great too.

    Motor to filter hose change

Hey all, I have a Pentair sd40 sand dollar (I think) pool filter set up. The high pressure hose from the motor to the filter cracked from dry rot and I ordered a replacement I'm having a heck of a time trying to get this back on the fittings. I can gt it about half way on before it...

    Balancing water with pool heater

I have another question regarding chlorine levels and gas heaters... I always have a problem with brown algae and when it appears it takes a while to get rid of. The heater manual says that FC should not exceed 5 ppm. Is the only way I'm going to defeat Brown algae by slamming the pool which...

    Balancing water with pool heater

I though I read on here somewhere to add borax and stabilizer to the skimmer but I have been mistaken! I will go with the TFP way! It hasn't failed me in the 4 years I have had the pool. Thanks jblizzle for linking that page. Its good to read through that again!

    Balancing water with pool heater

Hello All! Just installed a pool heater a couple of weeks ago. LOVE IT! Worth every penny! While everyone around me has closed up we were swimming at night a few days ago in September! (even the wife got in :kim:) Anyhow a question..... When adding chlorine or muriatic acid I add it in...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Like I said before I'm going to see what they look like when they arrive and if they even fit. I measured and I think they should. If they do fit then I will test them out. I may use some joist hangers to fasten the fascia to the joists better. If it's not going to work then I return them and...

    Deck extension over pool rail

I ordered 12 of the rocklers last night. I figured that this is the easiest way so far to extend the deck over the rail. If I don't see it as a solution or don't think it will work then I will simply return them and move on to the sistering of the joists with the notch or possibly use there...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Well I have ran into another possible solution and want to know what you guys think... I called Knape and Vogt and got the dementions of the 45 to see if it would fit and from what I can tell it would. If I went this route I was thinking of attaching one where every other joist meets the...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Thank you for that information. I was unaware of that. All of my rails are medal so i will steer clear of pt around the rails.

    Deck extension over pool rail

With the cantilever there will be no PT joist to pool rail contact. I really like the way that cantilever idea looks in that picture you posted. That's the look I'm shooting for. Again my only worry is the strength of the notched portion over the rail.

    Deck extension over pool rail

What about the new sistered joists that will be over hanging the pool rail? Shouldn't those be pressure treated? Those will be an 1/2" away from the pool rail.

    Deck extension over pool rail

The more I think about it the more I think I'm going to attempt the cantilever idea as shown in my last post. For one I maybe able to modify the deck without removing the deck boards this way. Also wouldn't require raising the deck with a step. I was worried about strength but as mentioned...

    Deck extension over pool rail

If I were going to try the cantilever idea (which I think I'am) then yes I would remove the fascia and in fact use old wood from the fascia for the new joists. I really like the boarder look on the last image. Here is my latest rendering of my plans. I think I would make each new joist...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Good point about notching the fascia. Not sure what the pull out force is. I'm sure there is something out there to attach the joist to the 2x4's. My wife doesn't the thought of the step up so I guess I need to focus on the cantilever design. I'm just really worried about the strength. I...

    Deck extension over pool rail

I was going to use my Kreg jig and drill pocket holes to attach them to the joists. The offset sisters would work to but cost more. I would also have to offset them going to the right and closer to the pool to make them perpendicular to the rail. I could cut a notch out over the fascia board.

    Deck extension over pool rail

So this is what I was thinking for the step up. You will have to imagine that these are all pressure treated 2x4's and the deck boards that are there will be removed and placed on top of that framing. I want to use 2x4's to keep the rise as small as possible but still have a good deal of...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Hi Dan! Thanks for posting. I have seen your photo when searching for "above ground pool decks" and its what originally gave the thought to do that to my deck. I have used it as an example earlier in this thread. Its awesome that your on here and if you don't mind could I ask you some things...

    Deck extension over pool rail

I'm ready for that. It always seems like things never go the way you plan. I will keep the winter cover space in mind to thanks. I may lay a frame down so you guys can see my other thought. Granted the cantilever is my#1 choice cause it won't involve raising the deck but I still want to see...

    Deck extension over pool rail

I completed a template of the joist and I think it turned out better and thicker than I thought. I did run into a problem because when I tried to fit it on the other side of the deck it didn't fit, so either the deck is slightly uneven or the pool is. I don't think it will be a significant...

    Deck extension over pool rail

It would be 1.5" of joist plus the decking on top of that. I could even make the notch rounded to match the contour of the pool. I think that would strengthen it some. As for the fascia board I was thinking of removing that completely. It was installed after the pool was up so it should be...

    Deck extension over pool rail

I to think that would be the best bet. I know it would be a lot of work but in the end would be the strongest option. As far the same elevation goes......the guy who suggested this method thought that there would not be enough meat to the wood by doing that and suggested I raise up that...

    Deck extension over pool rail

Points all well taken. Thank you for your insights, however I really don't want to lay composite on the pool rail and would much rather go over. (I know I'm stubborn) It was suggested a while ago to me by a friend who is a carpenter and I had forgotten about this idea until just a few...

    Deck extension over pool rail

What about the idea of using the angle iron or even a c channel to extend over the rail? I was thinking of using 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 angle iron 36" long and having about 10" cantilevered over the rail and the remainder secured to the deck. A 2" C-channel bar was another thought. I would mount...
