Hydrostatic Relief Valve diagnosis / replacement?

Many thanks - sounds like I will either investigate further after I get the pool swimmable, or possibly wait until fall closing... Closing isn't a bad time since I'm already pumping the pool down part way. Not a big deal to pump it down to the point where it is possible to easily reach the...

Hydrostatic Relief Valve diagnosis / replacement?

We are just looking at opening our pool this year - because my GF has been out of work since last August (anyone need a Senior Software Engineer?) we had been planning on not opening in order to reduce the expense, but the extended family wants us to.... Last year, I was seeing symptoms that...

    Getting it balanced / swimmable

Well it is looking better... I dumped in 4 boxes of borax Saturday morning, :whoot: and that seems to have gotten everything more or less in range. Water is now clear enough to see all the **** on the bottom (I need to make a repair on the pressure line for the robot, and I have to get a pair...

    Getting it balanced / swimmable

From pool school I have gotten the following recommended values - FCC - 4-6, shock 24 pH - 7.5-7.8 TA - 60 - 80 (SWG man says 100-120) CH - 250-350 CYA - 70-80 Borates 50 Salt 3000 - 3500 CSI should be between -/+ 0.6 Other than the big difference in TA suggestions between here and the manual...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

I may need to modify the programming on my box, but right now if I want to run split cycles (2 shorter cycles / day rather than one longer one) two hours / day is my smallest change increment - I can set each short cycle in one hour increments, or if I go to one long cycle / day I can set it in...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

I don't have any faith in my CYA number, as the test seems so hard to get a reading on, and my number is way off what the pool-store testers get - while my numbers for other tests are usually pretty close.... That said, I'm now up around 40 by my testing. I have the pump running 10 hours /...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

I do more or less pitch things in, but it's not totally random... I *KNOW* that I will be low on several areas, simply because I pumped out about 2 feet of water in the fall when I closed the pool - usually replaced by snow/ rain over the course of the winter, with some added town water as...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

Sort of what I figured... I was thinking in terms of dumping in a bunch of sticks / pucks / tabs (AFAIK, its like pasta - all the same stuff, just different shapes :p ) along with a gallon or so of 12% when I open in order to help keep the FC up without having to be there to keep dumping in the...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

I am fine with the way the PC works now, but it just seems like it would require less manual entry if it supported a range and set that per the goal levels.... Not a big deal, just file under the "would be nice" list, and drag it out for consideration if working on the next revision... Thanks...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

Ran some more tests today, after adding some stabilizer, though it hasn't all dissolved yet... My TFP testkit CYA is now up to around 35 (from under 20) and the FC level had also increased from 4 to 6.5 - so I've cut the pump run time down to 5 hours on / 7 off, and the SWG from 40% to 30%...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

Thanks for the comments... I haven't had any eatin' size frogs in the pool  :p just the little ones... Also one or two baby snapping turtles, but an amazing number of mice - though it varies a lot, I can go for weeks without any, and then I'll have a stretch of 1-3/ day... Those...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

OK, that makes a little more sense when you put it that way... Will add some more stabilizer, and see what happens. Looks like that is one of the few things I actually need to get at the pool store - to bad there isn't a lower budget alternative... I know when I was just bumping up my CH...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

I forget just how I came up with the 6 on / 6 off figure, but I know the recommendation is to have one or two turnovers / day, where theoretically all the water passes through the filter. It was also suggested that more short cycles was better than one long one... Given my old pump and filter...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

Thanks JL, though I have to say that I'm not getting it... I look at the chart which says that the more CYA I have, the more FC I need, and that reads to me that I'm needing more chlorine in the pool - though a lower number for a given CYA level with an SWG than if I was doing...

Confused about some of my chemistry levels....

As in my sig, pool is ~16.5Kgal, concrete / plaster (not sure how to tell the difference, or if it matters...) Sand filter, SWG, both of which are fairly new, and I'm still learning my way around them... Swimmer load is fairly low (Me a few times a week) but I get a lot of plant debris, and an...

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

That's about where I'm at... Level seems to be holding OK, though it's hard to tell with all the backwashing I've needed to do (Normal start up drill - have to backwash 3+ times while getting the swamp fixed, then am OK to the end of the season...) Will probably do some more checking once...

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

UPDATE.... As suggested, by mmcgovern, I did a bit more trouble shooting, with good news and bad news results... I got a friend to come over that could get into the plumbing, and we isolated the line and pressure tested it with a cylinder leakdown tester - and found it had zero...

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

Not really possible, as my chair probably wouldn't be able to make if over the new line, and likely would damage it if I tried... I could run a new line, and try to put a ramp over it, but that would look really tacky and be a stumbling hazard for the able-bodied... ex-Gooserider

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

Thought about that option, and it would possibly work - but we just bought a new booster pump for the Polaris last summer and rebuilt the drive on the robot itself, and I'd hate to waste that investment... The other problem is that my understanding of the electric bots is that they don't like...

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

I'd like to avoid the jackhammer if at all possible - As I mentioned, besides the obvious concrete problem, I'd have to rip out all the plumbing I just put in last spring because the suspect pipe runs under the equipment area. Pressure testing the suspect pipe is a good idea, but I'd put...

    Running filter with cover on???

I doubt that it would hurt, and it MIGHT help if your pool picks up a lot of crud over the winter to get a start on cleaning that out... Might deter the green slime a bit, though that is doubtful if not adding chlorine in some form... I can't say that I've tried either way, since in order to...

    ground wire at pump

My understanding of how it SHOULD be done, you need to figure out how that compares to how it is done, and what should be done to fix it - it is sketchy in the extreme to have it any way other than how it should be... Remember that the electrical code has been referred to the "Book of the Dead"...

    Arduino based home-brew pool controller

Broken pipe under slab! How to fix???

I have a problem - self induced, sort of, but I finally finished building a replacement pool control box (which I'll post more about eslwhere) and was able to start opening the pool today... Last fall, when closing down, I couldn't find the stopper for the line that went into the line that...

    Picking parts for plumbing mods

Realized that I had this thread still sitting open, and thought I should do an update... I got the parts and with help from some friends got everything installed... One disappointment was that the Compupool CPSC48 does NOT have a pool motor timer in it - something that wasn't clear on the...

    Polaris booster pump failure

Last night I heard louder than normal noises coming from the pool area, and when I investigated this afternoon, I found that the Polaris booster pump is seriously ill... With the booster pump off, and the main pump on, I get a drip out the bottom of the pump in the area between the pump...

    Filter install mostly done...

I thought about the 2" option, but I didn't think it would help that much since I still would have had 1.5" going in and out of the pool... Also the main pump has 1.5" inlets and outlets. In addition it would have been somewhat more expensive - minorly so for the fittings and pipe, but the...

    Filter install mostly done...

Yes they are the small 1" tabs that I scattered around while getting the pool open. Discoloration isn't an issue, as the pool isn't painted or given any other fancy finish. Hadn't heard that it would cause any other problems for the plaster. I didn't have a big enough floater to hold them...

one last shot... [attachment=0:38wecsq0]P1020128.JPG[/attachment:38wecsq0] I have several others, including the insides of the sand filter and the Compupool box, but don't want to bore folks unless you really want them... Looking at the photo again, I should add that the backwash pipe coming...
