SLAM with solar heater panels - clear pool, high chlorine consumption

Ran the pump/solar all night and my test results this morning were 1.5ppm higher than last night, so I may have tested too soon after adding another gallon 8:30pm last night: 20.5 (added last gallon at 7:30pm) 6:30am this morning: 22.0 (then added another gallon and left for the day) 5:30pm this...

SLAM with solar heater panels - clear pool, high chlorine consumption

Thanks I'm going for it, may as well pull the band aid. I don't want the algae in the solar panels to have the FC fall below my SLAM level while I'm sleeping so added another gallon and will will re-test tonight to compare to the morning.

SLAM with solar heater panels - clear pool, high chlorine consumption

Howdy, I posted last spring about the best way to re-start my solar heater for the season, as I usually get a bad yellow algae outbreak after doing so. Thanks to the pre-SLAMing tip I thought I nailed it this year, however although the pool is crystal clear, I've had two filter cleans and am...

Re-starting rooftop solar and avoiding algae

Forgot to say thanks for this tip, for some reason never saw your link to the tee. Just ordered a pair since I am battling crazy high chlorine consumtion after restarting my solar again this year. Want to drain better this coming off-season so will get these on.

Re-starting rooftop solar and avoiding algae

Ah, thanks, no I don't have any hose bibs. Are those installed on the panels themselves or on the PVC pipe leading to and from them?

Re-starting rooftop solar and avoiding algae

Actually I only have one valve, maybe thats my problem. I have a diverter valve near the filter that either goes to the roof or not. The return line has a check valve so water doesn't go up the return. There is a relief valve at the top that lets air in when the system is off. To drain, I put...

Re-starting rooftop solar and avoiding algae

Great responses, thanks. @Rocket J Squirrel when I shut down of the season I do open the valve and let it drain into the pool, although I'm not that patient and probably close the valve before I should. At that the end of this season I will perform a more thourough drain. @cowboycasey thanks...

Re-starting rooftop solar and avoiding algae

Hi, we are in southern california, we don't close our pool for the winter, but effectively stop using it from November until March as the solar can't keep the temp above 80 degrees. Every year in the spring I turn the valve to start up our roof-top solar, patch any leaks and start to get it...

Pentair Warrior SE vs. Dolphin S200

Got my SI today this is my first pool cleaner of any kind and I am stoked on so much about it. Very easy to use and seems to crank through the pool without a lot of issue. Did struggle on the deep end walls, there are some curves in there that must have thrown it off. Also got hung up on our...

Is the rebate good for this price or is the price too low?

Pentair Warrior SE vs. Dolphin S200

I am also considering the Warrior SI vs the Warrior SE from Marina Pool and Spa. I think the only difference is a Bluetooth remote and a "Quick Clean" option on the SI which runs $50 more than the SE. Anyone used these remotes or have a non-remote version and wish you had a remote? I've never...

Solar Hot Water Panels - Installation Best Practice For Waterproof Roof

Thanks, that's all I've ever heard to, so not sure what roof guy was talking about as I can't dig up any info in any search. Best I can assume is he wants be to slide some flat flashing between the shingles so if the seal breaks down water will go down the flashing.

Solar Hot Water Panels - Installation Best Practice For Waterproof Roof

Installed my solar panels last spring, I used clips with screws that went through the shingles and into the OSB with some black goo stuff to waterproof. We needed a new roof this winter which was unrelated to my solar panel install, but the roofing estimators noted my install job probably was...

Anyone Ever Lower CYA Slowly Via Irrigation?

I kind of stopped checking my CYA once I got to 50, and now after a few months of keeping the pool very warm and a lot of kids splashing about, I just checked it this weekend and my CYA was near zero. I can't believe I actually have to add CYA after working so hard to lower it. My R-0013 is...

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

So is the next thing to de-bug the Multiport? Should I replace the seals including the spider gasket? Is should I use a bubble leak detector solution on more seals? Thanks.

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

Took check valve out to solar and capped it. Problem still there. Realized the other check valve was not between filter and pump, but was between filter and return to pool. Put new Jandy check valve between filter and pump. Problem solved! No more DE out of drain, no more bubbles coming...

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

OK I have a check valve on order to replace the one to the solar as it sounds like water is coming down from there when I shut the pump off. I also opened up the multiport and didn't see much that was worn. I cleaned a bit and re-lubed the spider gasket and the o-ring that seals the two...

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

Hi Joel, there is no water on the equipment pad. I do not have an ozone generator. I have at times seen the pump spit water from the lid, it happens only about 5% of the time, and have not seen it since I've had this problem. I shut the pump off and then turned the Multiport to CLOSED and I...

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

I think I can replace the Solar check valve pretty easy, the one off the filter will need a couple pipes cut to get access. Thinking the Jandy 1.5-2" check valves.

I hope I labeled this right and it makes sense. Check valve #1 is after filter, check valve #2 is solar return. I think.

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

Good plan. Is there anyway to test without cutting them out and replacing them? It's pretty tight in there, think I will have to replace a lot of piping just to replace those check valves. If I do it, I guess it will be a good time to put more 45s in there instead of 90s.

Help diagnose DE coming from main drain with pump off

I recently noticed DE has been coming out of my main drain when the pump shuts off. I searched and found some good threads here that it is probably an air leak somewhere in my system, allowing water/DE to drain out of the filter and back into the pool. What I can't figure out is where the leak...

Need help with used FAFCO solar panels

Dang you are lucky all the hardware came with yours. I picked up 8 panels for $100 on Craigslist, but am spending over $200 in hardware. It is expensive, just for clips, and couplings, and etc. Thinking I should find a way to manufacture these and sell them myself...

Overwhelmed by new Pool Pump decision - advice needed

My pool local pool place is trying to sell me on the 3HP Intelliflo 2 VST for $1,300 to replace my 1.5Hp single speed Hayward. It's like it's not even a discussion with this place, must be the only pump they like to install.

Help With These Fafco Solar Panels

Well I'm starting to lay them out and I can't seem to find 2 1/2" straight radiator hose to connect these together. I did buy some Fernco couplings online earlier today, then when on the roof taking my old junky panels down, I noticed one of the Fernco's I put up last summer is super exanded...

Going To Try The Skimlite 8016 Fiberglass Pool Pole

I like the pole, plenty strong and light enough for me. I keep it in the shade and no problems with fiberglass degradation yet. My wife thinks the clamp that holds the two pieces keeps hitting her hand as she pulls the pole up, it's a bit rougher
