total newb, don't know where to start with my TF-100

Did you say that you have DE? My (now replaced) sand filter would take forever...many days...to clear my pool from cloudy to clear. Reminds me that I need to update my signature.

    Pool Math........The App

I use Pool Pal. Been using for a couple years now. The calcs seem pretty good...I add what it says, and it results in the numbers I target. It is not great for viewing trends over time, which is something that I look forward to seeing in this new app.

    What in the CYA???

CYA does not climb without being added. However, it is difficult to measure accurately, so it may appear fluctuate, even with a good test kit. You are on the right track getting a high quality test kit, and planning for a SLAM. Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

    First TF-100 readings. Need help

Second the thought that liquid bleach is ASAP priority...like right now...tonight. Why? Right now you have a numbers problem. If wait a day, or wait for a tablet to desolve, your numbers problem may be secondary to your algea problem. At least, that is how my own pool is. I think general...

    Frustrated beyond belief

The key thing is that you need an accurate test kit. TF100 is the best value for that, as it is basically a lower cost alternative to the professional grade Taylor kits...using the same chemicals. These are the types of tests used by professionals who maintain pools...some of whom are on this...

I'm not a stupid person, I just play one on TFP. A story of a check valve.

Agree that you may have a leak. In this case, it is letting air into the line, so water drains back to the pool. Before pump may have looked like it was running, but lack of proper priming (from air in the line) may have kept it from having real flow...mine does that if water level gets down...

Pentair Clean and Clear Plus Sizing?

I am considering a Pentair Clean and Clear Plus to replace a Waterway sand filter that did not seem to be properly filtering at the end of last season. Pool is about 16.5k gallons, salt water, with solar loop, and I intend to run flow around 20-25gpm for a lot of the time. I am not sure what...

Thinking of an SWG, which one to get

I am happy with my Autopilot, which will adjust chlorine output as water temperature fluctuates. Blows internal fuses a couple times per season, usually during storms, but otherwise seems like a solid unit. I think my local dealer sells them for something like $1500 installed for the 40k cell...

    Converting Salt to Chlorine?

Salt is easier to maintain, which is the whole point of a salt water pool. A salt water pool is chlorinated, just like a chlorine pool. The difference is where the chlorine comes from. In a chlorine pool, the chlorine comes from you driving to the store, buying chlorine every week, and...

Buying house with my first pool

If you replace one light with LED, you really should replace both to match. Otherwise the color difference (even with whites) and brightness difference will be very noticeable.

First Time Pool Owner and Results of Test Scary...WHAT DO WE DO?

I'm important to have a good understanding of the CYA number. Is it really low (like 10), or really high, like 100+? It's not clear from what you say. This is important to know, because IF your CYA is really high, the advice here will be to lower your CYA through draining and replacing...

    Portable solar panel

Might a SolarAttic system solve your problem? My system is virtually hidden, except two pipes running up to the soffet.

    A couple closing questions

My (most?) returns have a 1.5" threaded hole, so a 1.5" pvc plug can thread right in. That's how the directional eyes hole things attach, so you turn those counter clockwise to remove them, then put the plugs in their place.

Getting a lot of Air in my return lines

It's not 100% certainty that a leak after the pump would leak. I've had an after pump leak suck air once before. Step#1 should be listening at all the connections, before getting more complicated. I have usually been able to hear my leaks. (I had a number of small leaks as my temporary...

Pools and Children - Safety Fence Questions

I chose a "Protect a Child" fence, as it's my primary fence, and it's maybe the only one that can pass NY State code as a primary pool barrier. I install many things myself. I would never install this myself...get a hole in the concrete off by just a little, and you'll have a major issue with...

    Too many solar panels?

If it's a parallel setup, your warmer panels are not getting as much flow as your cooler panels. Water coming out should not be hot. Slightly warmer is actually ideal for heat transfer. You are probably heating 44 gallons per minute by that amount...which is actually a lot of heat if you are...

    Any Geeks Out There?

I built a custom board based on arduino. http://www.poolduino.com It runs my pump, controls my SolarAttic heating, and logs temps to a website. Look at that for some design ideas. I hope to sell them some day, but other things are higher on my priority list right now.

New Pool Owner and New VS Pump

Waterway...not sure model...not going out to check...standard unit my PB uses. Anyway, let's get this thread back on topic. Some filters have minimum flow rate. It's worth checking if that may or may not be a concern for yours.

New Pool Owner and New VS Pump

My sand filter lists minimal flow rate (25gpm) right on the model/specs label.

New Pool Owner and New VS Pump

Your filter may require a minimum flow rate. Without a flow meter it's hard to know where you are at, but if it seems the filter may not be working, you may need to up the speed.

Trying to make a decision on SWG

I have no acid demand with mine. pH is rock solid. I spent a lot of effort to get the TA in line, which may be why.

    burning eyes

Do you know what your pH usually tests at? One of the things many of us seem to be dancing around is that whatever the pH was after the rain, is it much different than the level before the rain? Regardless of number, if it changed, then that's one potential cause. Anther question, related to...

Trying to make a decision on SWG

Compared to typical liquid chlorine pools, the only people harmed by SWG pools, are the people who make their money by selling pool chemicals. I can't imagine owning a pool without a SWG.

    How many LED's to get

I have two in my kidney. One under the diving board, one in the shallow end. Pool builder spec'd two lights, which I think was a good decision, but it probably depends on the light which is used. If you have a light in mind, what does the manufacturer suggest? I believe my manual (long...

Do you store your cell and digital readout away when closing the pool?

As instructed by my pool builder, I leave my AutoPilot Digital SWG cell outside, but bring in the pump. My other equipment (AutoPilot Digital, timer, etc) are mounted in my garage and stay there all winter. RV antifreeze gets poured in all pipes once water is blown out. I am near Syracuse, NY.

New pool with the ever popular green water syndrome...

Tf100 is the best value...the amount of test chemicals you get for what you pay. If your pool is green, the XL version is worth considering. The owner of that company is affiliated with this site, but that has no impact on my suggestion. Same chemicals as the Taylor kits, but for the cost...
