CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

Thanks - I have a good test kit - I used it for the CYA. It's not cheap, though, especially since I just spent $60 on bleach - so "dark purple" is good enough for me until I'm closer to a chlorine level that I need!

CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

CYA is now 60. Chlorine is still way (dark purple - way more than 10). I turned off the SWG - how long until the excess FC burns off - any thoughts?

CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

Our pump runs 24 hours a day, and both our filter and our pump are oversized - previous owner's doing. I'll need to get a timer to save on electricity at some point. 2.5 hours later, and still way up on the FC (dark purple on my strip). CYA appears to be up. I think I am in the clear. I...

CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

On the bucket test, what am I checking every 1/8 tsp? FC? How long do I wait? I've read several posts on the bucket test, but that part has not been clear to me. In any event, I just added 8 more 182 oz jugs (33ppm). I did a test in an area that I did not pour the bleach half an hour later...

CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

2.5 times CYA? I'm going to need some more bleach! I had like 70 CYA for the SWG! I'm going to see if there is any FC this morning (last year something like this happened, and I was really discouraged, and then all of a sudden I had FC). If it is low, I'm going to go buy more bleach, I guess.

CYA => Ammonia - getting FC up

Hi all- Seems like the time of year when I need to lean on everyone's expertise. We just opened our pool, and we had the CYA to Ammonia conversion that others have written about. My numbers yesterday were: 21500 Gal. outdoor SWG pool 0 FC 4 TC/CC 0 CYA 6ish ppm Ammonia Other chemicals were...

    Pulling my hair out...

OK, so its been a while, but here are the new numbers, verified by the pool store: FC 2.26 TC 2.29 ALK 121 PH 8.1 (ouch - probably from the refill, right?) CYA 73 CH 168 Saturation .59 Clear, no Algae So, my plan is to add 3lbs of PH Down, and up my SWG to 30% (it's been running at 20%). Any...

    Pulling my hair out...

Update and request for more help... Pool size: 16x34 - 3' deep in the shallow, 7.5' deep in the deep end I drained and refilled the pool about 18" over the last couple of days. CYA (black dot test) shows at about 60. The strip shows a little more maroon than that, which implies a higher...

    Pulling my hair out...

Update - 1. FC was 7 or 8 today (hard to tell - I need a better kit) - I actually dialed back the SWG a bit. 2. Pool water tasted salty. As soon as my new salt strips come in (pool store sold me defective ones) and I get a better CYA test kit, I am definitely going to be draining. 3. I...

Solar salt - that's good to know! I can get it at Lowe's, right? You are convincing me. I assure you that my hesitation is not that I don't believe you or the advice.

    Pulling my hair out...

No delusions, just gun-shy given the pain I've already had. I'd have to drain 40% of my pool! My plan is to struggle along this year (CYA will drop as it rains) and do a big drain at winter close in Sept. and let rain and snow refill. If it is too hard to keep things in check I'll drain earlier.

    Pulling my hair out...

I have a gal of 12% and 4 x 1.42 gal of 6%. Maybe I'll put some of that in in the morning if the FC levels aren't up enough.

    Pulling my hair out...

So, I measured today, and all of my tests showed - miracle of miracles - between 2.5 and 4 FC. I even did a bucket test with 1/3 Pool, 2/3 tap and that showed about the same (when multiplied by 3) to make sure I wasn't bleaching out. So, either: 1. The FC was so high yesterday that it...

    Pulling my hair out...

Thanks for the replies, all. I know the CYA is high, but I live in WV, where it rains all the time (rained all night), so I add a bunch of water and do a partial drain in the winter. My SWG manufacturer says CYA of 50 and FC of .5-1.5. Thus, I'm not too concerned about the CYA of 136, as I...

    Pulling my hair out...

Not sure if this is the right forum, but my bottom line question is "what else can I test" so I'm posting here. I have a 23,500 gal vinyl pool with a high CYA - 136 (high, I know) and a new SWG. I would rather not dilute if I can - it will happen naturally with all the rain we get in the summer...
