    battling (possibly) mustard algae

yeah, now that you mentioned I connected the dots. we had very heavy rains last year and I got a tonne for runoff in the pool. it is flash with the ground and we are on a hill so water can just flow into it. There was brown stuff leaking between the tiles. could be rusted pipes or some other...

    battling (possibly) mustard algae

Hi, I have a very old pool and I think I got the dreaded mustard algae. is this it? egNLT7W2OpU how can I tell if it is dead? I went through SLAM again (second time in a row) and the water is crystal clear. last week I cleaned my sand filter and there were tons of this brown stuff coming out of...

    green algae cannot be erradicated

My pool is flushed with the ground. Once the soil is saturated with water I get a fair bit of runoff that turns my pool into a pond very quickly. I do have FAS/DPD set. The chlorine drop was minimal. I was away for the weekend and brushed green stuff again this morning... I'm going to start SLAM...

    green algae cannot be erradicated

yes, I do have a test kit. lots of vials and chemicals. I have been brushing the pool every morning and this plus high chlorine and low CYA seems to be working. I did raise Cya and will check the levels tomorrow. I don't expect it to be more than 30 though. Next rain will screw the balance and I...

    green algae cannot be erradicated

That's what I thought tim5055. I kept my CYA low and chlorine levels even higher than in the SLAM. I guess the brushing every day is the missing component.

    green algae cannot be erradicated

thank you guys. I will try the cover off with higher cya. I like to have the cover on as it heats the pool really quickly and we can start the season early. cheers.

    green algae cannot be erradicated

Hi, I have been fighting green algae every year with variuos level of success. Swimming season is slowly starting here in Australia and I'm losing the battles already... I have an old 65000L concrete pool. It is covered with a floating blue (bubble wrap type) cover, practially all the time...

Algae - sand filter too old?

I have discovered a little algae colony at the bottom of my pool on top of grey plastic cover for disused outlet. And I thought I killed it all already... I even checked behind the light (there was nothing there). besides that the water looks great. 11 days of SLAM so far. thank you everybody...

Algae - sand filter too old?

I know that. First two days (weekend) I checked the FC level multiple times a day (started hourly). But during week I have to go to work so I can do it only twice a day (as per minimum recommendation from pool school). Another weekend is coming but I don't think I will get my reagent refill in...

Algae - sand filter too old?

Every morning and evening I raise FC to the shock level (16). It drops to 11 during the day (with SWG running) and to 11-15 over night. I just used my last drop of R-871 so from now on (before I get a refill) I will have to guess... The water looks great so it is promising! cheers Pawel

Algae - sand filter too old?

yep. the pool was covered with FC above 5 all the time, the pump was running for 4h a day (+SWG). the water was nice and clear when I uncovered it but there was dead and live algae at the bottom which made the water cloudy once stirred. I did occasionally brush the walls but never the bottom...

Algae - sand filter too old?

I ditched cal-hypo already. I thought the water was getting milky because of dead algae. I can increase CH with dedicated calcium increaser (this will probably make water milky again) once I'm done with algae. Considering I added like 8kg of cal hypo in last month my CH is probably much higher...

Algae - sand filter too old?

got Sodium Hypochlorite today and will continue to SLAM with that. I was going to raise CYA to 70-80 but after I get rid of algae. Battling it with such high CYA will get expensive. How do you test FC during SLAM with such high CYA? 2oz bottle of 871 will go in a few days... thanks. Pawel

Algae - sand filter too old?

I followed the process: checked the FC level in the morning and added enough cal-hypo to raise it to at least 16 (a value calculated using poolcalculator) over 1kg if I remember correctly. my CYA is somewhere in the 30-40 range. hard to tell exactly with the tube test in that range. an hour...

Algae - sand filter too old?

I know I make a mistake somewhere. That's why I asked some questions :-) I grew up in a country with no private pools. This is all fairly new to me. On top of that I have a house with a very old pool so I struggle. I didn't post test results because my question was about the filter. I added the...

Algae - sand filter too old?

hi, Just to clarify - I do maintain proper FC levels for my CYA. I have TF100 test kit and I follow all procedures outlined here. I have been following this forum for a few years. FC - 16 is the level I need to shock at the moment (CYA around 30-40). I started shock with PH 7.5 Chlorine level in...

Algae - sand filter too old?

Hi. I have been fighting algae since I can remember. The water in my pool is almost never sparkling and fully transparent. Is it possible that my sand filter just first do the job properly? I cleaned it up a few days ago (garden hose from the top) and there was lots of Crud coming out. I had to...

Taylor or tf100 test kit availability in Australia?

I have been trying to buy some refills in AU and so far I couldn't find any. Overseas delivery charges make it not feasible to import. Delivery of a bottle of R871 (that costs under $10) is $45! Any one knows Australian place that that sells them? Pawel

    lost fight with algae?

hmm I was told that FC higher than 5 is dangerous for the equipment, clothing etc. according to CYA chart (pool school) 5 is plenty for SWG CYA (Stabilizer) Minimum FC Target FC Shock FC 60 3 4 24 70 3 5 28 80 4 6 30 is regular brushing of the walls a common maintenance? It seems I should do...

    lost fight with algae?

Hi. I shock using the procedure described in the pool school. CYA at the moment is at 40 but was at 50 before when I did most of the shocking. TA 150. FC always above 5. When shocked was high like 17-19. CC 0 PH 7.8 CH 220 I dissolve granular chlorine in a bucket and pour around the pool...

    lost fight with algae?

hi, I have been following advice on this forum for a year or so. Thank you all for great help. Most of the summer (southern hemisphere) I have been fighting green algae. I did shock the pool at least 5 times this season which is I think quite a lot. Each time I had almost no CC but had to...

help me understand PH, please :-)

I usually add acid in the evening and test the result in the morning. I guess it can raise a bit overnight but the change will be difficult to measure. I use Taylors K-1000 to measure PH. Is there something better/more accurate available?

help me understand PH, please :-)

thanks Richard. didn't know that the other settings affect the calculation. Now it tells me I should add 320ml. It is better but it is still way off. I guess I'll measure the pool again (it has really odd shape) to make sure I didn't make any mistakes last time. My TA is way to high (150) and...
