Sta-rite max-e-therm 400 turns on, rattles makes noises then heater turns off

Good point. Will check. Might be time for a shock and a backwash + DE.

Sta-rite max-e-therm 400 turns on, rattles makes noises then heater turns off

Thanks for saving me time and money again. I put the variable speed pump in the fast 1st hour setting and the heater works fine. The filter is probably a bit backed up along with the slow mid-day variable speed motor speed setting. You’re right, I need to backwash my filter. I backwashed it...

Sta-rite max-e-therm 400 turns on, rattles makes noises then heater turns off

Just picked up a new issue. A few seconds after the heater lights up, there are some clanging noises and the pipes rattle, then the heater stops heating. Guessing the issue is likely a broken bypass valve? I uploaded a video. I found this video, which seems similar.

Looking for Houston company to do upgrade (VS pump, SWCG)

For completeness, I went with Watt Pool Service Inc. Their quote wasn’t the lowest, but still competitive. One of my coworkers uses them and they’ve been in business for a long time, so thought I would give them a shot. Very professional, the technician recognized I had some basic knowledge...

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

Going to get some quotes on VS motor, new pump, SWCG this coming week. Meanwhile going to go through the warranty process out of curiosity. My (low) expectation is that the warranty claim will be rejected for any number of reasons. I had the motor on the bench today and it doesn’t start on...

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

The only thing I could figure is whoever installed this wanted to make it difficult for anyone trying to repair it. I guess I could take it to Leslie’s Pool and try and workout the model number.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

I was kind of curious about the impeller-pump match, so took a close look at the impeller now and boy is that suspicious…. To me it looks like someone intentionally obscured the part number.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

Had a couple really busy weeks at work and end of school year stuff with the kids, but started the warranty process with Backyard Pool Superstore on the motor this week. Then today I started the motor and found a bad leak on the MPV at the drain plug. The MPV is cracked, so just going to take...

Looking for Houston company to do upgrade (VS pump, SWCG)

Just woke up to a crack in the multi port valve that will need replacing (crack is at the little drain plug). I figure this is probably a hint that I should finally upgrade to a variable speed motor, new pump, and a SWCG. Pool is about 11,000 gallons. Wondering if anyone has any...

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

Yep. But it won’t be today. I’ve replaced the seal and gasket before, but looks like I didn’t take any pictures of the impeller.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

I’d have to take the motor off again to get the impeller info. The pump/impeller is at least 20 years old. The motor is a century b2855 I installed last June.

The possible pump/impeller motor mismatch you suggested earlier.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

It’s a Pentair challenger pump. Pretty sure the pump/motor match is ok.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

Not really looking to buy a new pump and variable speed motor at this point. I will probably do this at some point, just not this season.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

So I should try replacing the motor bearings next? I failed to mention earlier that the pump has been making more “bearing loudness” noise for the past few months.

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

1 year. It replaced a b855 that I believe was seized. I bought it off Amazon, which I regret, but I was in a hurry and the price was good. I’m always super skeptical now if I’m actually getting something “new” when buying from Amazon.

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

I realized I forgot to come back after getting an electrician to look at it. Basically recommendation is to install a grounding rod, install new grounding bar and separate neutrals and grounds. Install one new ground rod, ground clamp, and grounding conductor for the sub panel. Separate the...

Pump buzzes, needs hand turn to start, does not appear to be capacitor issue

So on Monday morning my Century Centurion B2855 2 HP motor was super hot and not pumping. I turned off the power, after it cooled down I turned the power on and got the buzz sound and maybe after 20 seconds the buzz stops and the motor is hot. Assuming it was a capacitor issue, I headed over...

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

Fortunately the box doesn’t get sun exposure, but agree with the rest. It’s odd for sure. I’ve never had a breaker die anywhere else in my life… At least I’ll clean the bus contacts for now. Need to get opinions from a couple electricians.

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

Yeah agree. A ground wire will need to be run from the subpanel to the main panel. It appears the bonding was ok per code before the 2000s. Minute 13 and beyond in the video make the advantages of the modern grounding very clear. So for the lifetime of the GFCI breaker, >10 year lifespan...

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

The plot is thickening… I guess a long time ago, it was permissible to have a 220V subpanel with no dedicated ground. The original garage is from 1919, though the current garage is newer, I need to check when it was built… I wonder if the newer garage structure predates this requirement or it...

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

One thing I’m confused about right now is I only see three wires coming into the subpanel from the main panel (3 black wires in photo). I don’t see an obvious ground wire.

Another dead GFCI breaker - what is a normal lifespan?

Yeah, I didn’t do that work. Pretty sure a master electrician would not sign off on that. Back in 2012, I didn’t appreciate that most contractors in Houston will cut all sorts of corners. It’s a lot different than other places I’ve lived where you need to maintain a good reputation to stay in...
