    Automatic Skimmers

Today I was out skimming the pool for the thousands of helicopters falling from the neighborhood trees and my own trees. At the same time, I can see the cotton woods are starting to shed which means three weeks of daily skimming and skimmer basket cleaning as soon as I get home from work. My...

Opening Pool after liner replacement in the fall

Thanks Texas Splash for the guidance. I will get stabilizer today and get started on raising the CYA level. Is there a specific brand of stabilizer that I should be using or just look for granular stabilizer. I will most likely get this at Walmart.

Opening Pool after liner replacement in the fall

A new liner was installed last fall when closing the pool. All new water fill from city water source brought in by truck and topped off with garden hose when opening the pool on Memorial Day. Closed the pool with a kit provided by pool company that installed the liner. I don't recall the name of...

    Liquid Chlorine Storage

I see that TFP states that storge of chlorine is best in a cool dark place and that areas of high heat will cause chlorine to lose some of its effectiveness. I have been storing chlorine in my sunroom because of the convenience of location to the pool but the sunroom gets no shade and is quite...

    Chlorine Question

In the past when I needed Chlorine I just went to the local store with the lowest advertised price and got what I needed. Since joining TFP I have learned that not all Chlorine is equal. When I need to get Liquid Chlorine now, I look for the Sodium Hypochlorite percentage and use that as my...

What cleaner to use for dirt accumulation at water line on pool steps

You are correct in that I just opened the pool. This is really the first weekend that I have been able to do anything with it other than opening it and getting everything operational. I have not done an overnight chlorine loss test. I have the TF-100 test kit. Is that kit sufficient for the...

What cleaner to use for dirt accumulation at water line on pool steps

I will try a Magic Eraser on the steps. I know that my FC level is currently low and needs to be increased. I do not think it is mildew. There is discoloration of the pool liner all the way around the pool but not anything like on the pool steps. Just a side note is that the liner is being...

What cleaner to use for dirt accumulation at water line on pool steps

I would really like to completely remove this scum line at the water edge that is on my pool steps. Brushing alone is not very effective and I don't know what type of cleaner to use that will not cause a problem for the pool water. Can I get a recommendation for what is safe and effective to use?

Sand filter for change to Cartridge

Finally resolved this dilemma. On 5/26/2022 we replaced our old Hayward Sand Filter with a Hayward Model S224T2 Pro Series High Rate Sand Filter. Happy to report no more sand discharging into the pool through the return line and no more leaking through the filter housing. As mknauss said, "the...

Disaster at Pool Start Up - Torn Liner

Many thanks IceShadow. I found debris in the impellor that I removed and put the Robot back together. Since doing that I have ran three two-hour cycles to test the unit and it is working normally now. Thanks again!!

Disaster at Pool Start Up - Torn Liner

So the update is that I went ahead with a patch and ordered a replacement liner. Probably could have put the patch on myself but ended up having the company that installed the pool and is replacing the liner put the patch on when he came over to take measurements for the replacement liner. It's...

Disaster at Pool Start Up - Torn Liner

Working on the pool opening this past weekend. Pulled off the cover and started to add water while working on the other pool opening chores. While installing the ladder, my wife asked me what is wrong with the liner. I turned around to see what she was talking about and see this huge tear in the...

Sand filter for change to Cartridge

Last season I posted about two issues with my filter. First issue is that the filter is discharging sand into the pool through the return lines after backwashing the filter. The second is that I have a small hole in the filter housing just below the head unit. I limped through the remainder of...

    Thank You to TFP

For me the season is over. I closed my pool this weekend. Just wanted to reach out and say thanks to all the members who answered my questions this year. I found out about TFP a short while ago and signed up. I really like the site and how members give quick feedback to important to me...

    Filter Sand accumulating in Pool

Thanks ferretbone for your reply... The leak is is in the filter body itself. I will check for a broken air relief screen. I assume it is broken because the sand issue is new this year after several years of no problems.

    Filter Sand accumulating in Pool

Ugh. I was afraid of that and kind of figured that a replacement for the filter would be needed. The plan at this point is to limp along until the end of the season which isn't that far from now and to begin the search for a replacement filter. Thanks for your input today.

    Filter Sand accumulating in Pool

The filter body is original to the pool install in 2001 so it's 20 years old this summer. The pinhole is in the filter body itself.

    Filter Sand accumulating in Pool

Every week I am getting an accumulation of filter sand in the bottom of the pool directly below the return lines. Mostly below the return line in the deep end and a much smaller amount below the return in the shallow end. I would estimate that I vacuum up about two cups a week. It is definitely...

Getting caught up on answering questions. 1) YipeeSkippy: I typically close the pool the weekend after Labor Day 2) Lilypad: I updated my signature to show that I have the TF-100 kit. I have been using it since July 25 3) Mkolb: Thanks for commenting on how much chlorine you are using. It...

    Adding a lot of bleach

I had been using pucks for as long as I had the pool but have stopped that completely after joining this forum. When the pool was built the contractor set it up with an automatic chlorinator that use's the 3" pucks. CYA is a term I didn't even know existed until joining TFP. I absolutely look...

    Adding a lot of bleach

Thanks for the explanation ajw22. I will do as you say and keep adding bleach. If I understand what your are saying, right now I should be using around 1 gallon of 10% per day. Of course that would be based on testing as well.
