Pool Rescue after huge storm - Flocculant works.

I'll agree to that, it doesn't need to be regularly thrashed but having the information available (I note the Wiki article has the necessary caveats) is so useful for the times it can help. Thanks! I was steeling myself for a lengthy fight and everything went better than expected. Mostly due...

How fast does liquid chlorine burn?

Heh, I just posted my experience with recovering from a storm. 45ppm in 24hrs is my record. Chlorine will get used up as fast as UV and organic material can remove it.

Pool Rescue after huge storm - Flocculant works.

Not really a start but a reboot - after 600mm of rain, garden runoff etc, pool was DARK BROWN. Couldn't see the shallowest step, I just turned off the pump and chlorinator and waited for the weather to clear. First, I put the suction cleaner to work to try and remove some of the debris in the...

    Reducing Persistently High pH

I had high TA (100+) before and was using HEAPS of acid to try and keep a lid on pH. Finally, got TA levels down and acid usage dropped. But the pH would still try to drift above 8, which is the limit of my test kit, so I would have to add small amounts of acid quite often to keep it at 7.8 or...

Treating black algae when pool is empty

I nailed my black algae by spreading 1kg of trichlor granules wherever I saw algae. dissolves slowly, algae gone. FC up to 30 for a week. no brushing required. (I started off with TFP liquid shock and daily brushing method, what a chore.. I'll go back to trichlor every time now).

    Salt and steel

You want 316L grade stainless steel. 316 is also good enough but 316L is the best. It's used in pool and marine environments all the time. 304 stainless will rust eventually in salt water, so make sure it's 316. copper is no good. You can get "marine bronze" alloys as well but pure copper...

Want to Replace Single Speed Pump

What? No way. 1.5HP is around 1100W. Pure and simple. 1.4HP is 1kW. I've seen some 1.5HP pumps rated as 1100W output and 1500W input. Are you sure it's not VA you're measuring? Motors are inductive and may have poor power factor. If you're measuring VA rather than actual Watts you'll get a...

    Borates in Australia ?

Just to follow up on this, I asked boricacid.com.au for their MSDS and it’s stated at >99% boric acid. You won’t get better than that! It also lists the EC50 (50% kill, 96hrs) for algae at 15ppm, half what I plan to use. First time seeing a number for the algaecidal benefits so that’s neat.

New cleaner recommendation - special requirements - giant leaves

I have to deal with eucalyptus (gum tree) leaves and bark.. and I'm already considering making my own pool cleaner with a macerator in it. But I did recently buy an Onga Hammerhead and it deals with gum leaves OK. Sycamore? Nah. I agree with turning it into firewood

    Borates in Australia ?

I found CCL's Rainbow Chart (under "pH test is hard to read" heading) to be far more helpful than the sticker on the bottle, but that's with "normal" male colour perception (primary colours only, please ). Ultimately I'll get a GOOD pH meter (HannaInst or Atlas Scientific). Bought a $10...

Australia: How "granular" is your CYA?

    Will do, thanks (y)

PoolMath bug iOS + feature request

Oh I see the other way of adding chlorine now. Thanks, I'll try that one next time and see if it "sticks" :)

Covered and unattended pool for three years. What are my first two steps?

    1) pour yourself a stiff drink 2) prepare to laugh hysterically as you pull back the cover 3) post lots of pics so TFP can help (after we pick ourselves up off the ground from laughing too).

    Borates in Australia ?

They shipped it to me with white paper wrapping around the bucket so you couldn't see what it is. Just don't unwrap it (y) Saw another comment on here saying at 50ppm you should aim to drink less than a cup of pool water a day. So.. if you have kids or pets that drink the pool water then...

Australia: How "granular" is your CYA?

Sydney, powdered CYA. The bucket method sucked, I added CYA and water and the CYA just formed a solid plug at the bottom of the bucket. I ended up repeatedly dipping the bucket in the pool and letting some pool water in, swirling it around, and tipping the water out (while keeping the solid...

    Borates in Australia ?

https://boricacid.com.au/ I bought an 8kg bucket, haven't tried it yet as I'm trying to stabilise the other parameters first. Probably should have bought the 16kg bucket, 8 won't be quite enough.

PoolMath bug iOS + feature request

Both of these entries were added at the same time but one of them was catching up for the day before.. so “2 days ago” is Jan 28, when I put the log in, not the actual date of the chemical add (Jan27 per RHS) - it’s a bit confusing. Also would be great to have the ability for PoolMath to: 1)...

Any Pool Automation Grafana / InfluxDB users out there?

Just bought a house with a saltwater pool. Am electronics engineer, and things that can be automated or improved get my attention (like the ancient SWG that really needs to be able to alternate its polarity - should be a day job to fix that up). I'm gearing up for pretty Grafana graphs too...
