    Impeller replacement issue

I’ll give that a try! I presume it should still fit fairly tightly around the impeller to prevent leaking? Thank you!

    Impeller replacement issue

Here are some pics. The gray impeller is the old one. The sleeve cracked from water intrusion/rust expansion of the shaft. Also note that the end of the impeller that goes into the faceplate did disintegrate a little over the years. The part number on the impeller are the same on the new black...

    Impeller replacement issue

Hi all. I’m replacing the impeller on my Waterway 1.5 hp pump. Two questions: 1. The shaft was fairly rusted where the impeller attaches. I sanded most of it off but not sure if I got enough of it off. How can I tell if the impeller is seated far enough? It is plenty tight. 2. I cannot get...

Oops! I ran pump with valve set to 'closed' - possible damage?

Thanks for the info. I hooked it back up and no leaks, and everything seems OK. However, a follow-on question - one that I've been pondering for a while. Because my water level is below the skimmer (and I'm close to closing for the season so don't really want to refill it), I threaded a hose...

Oops! I ran pump with valve set to 'closed' - possible damage?

Hi everyone, So, I was all excited last night to install a new liquid filled pressure gauge on my filter (yeah, it's the little things in life...). I removed the old gauge and had a little stream of water coming out, so I thought I'd be smart and just move the filter selector valve to 'closed'...

Sand (or fine silt?) coming from return vent?

Haven't done that yet with my fingers yet, but according to my wife's toes, and the way it "vaporizes" when brushed, it is very fine and probably not sand. If it's not sand, do I just keep vacuuming it up and hope it stops collecting, or could it be recirculating? Anyway, I'll get my fingers...

Sand (or fine silt?) coming from return vent?

Hi all, I am wondering if someone can comment (or point me to a thread) on sand coming out of the return vent. I have a sand filter and have noticed lately that when I run it for a longer period of time like overnight, I get small buildups of brown sand (or fine silt, maybe?) on the floor of...

Water flow slower - where should I start?

Thanks again, everybody. Brief update: the problem was a clogged impeller. Easy enough to clear up. Hardest part was unhooking the hoses and hooking them back up. 2 screws, remove the basket, and boom a big wad of leaf debris. And now flow is WAY improved. Yay! Also the off-vs.-on...

Water flow slower - where should I start?

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll pull the filter and check it for clogs and gasket issues. Then look into how to find air leaks. Bubbles are very minimal, FYI, and the pad is dry around the pump and filter. FYI the pressure on the filter gauge does seem rather low compared to last year...

Water flow slower - where should I start?

Hi all, The water from my return is coming out noticeably slower this year than previous years. Not sure where I should start to try to diagnose and fix the issue. A few more clues: When I backflush the filter, the flow there is slower as well (so I presume it probably isn't my return...

Which heats faster during the day - solar cover on or off?

Thanks for the input, everyone! I never considered all the factors involved - maybe we need a cover-on-or-off calculator here at TFP where we can enter %RH, wind speed, cover color, etc.! ;) LOL

Which heats faster during the day - solar cover on or off?

Hi All, The subject line pretty much spells out my question. I realize that the cover would help reduce FC burnoff from the sun, and retains heat at night, but am wondering if the water would heat up faster in direct sun with it off. Anyone have a guess? We had a looooong slow thaw up here...

Tip for finding a vinyl liner leak

I finally found the leak that has been plaguing me and thought I'd offer up a tip that might help others. What finally homed me into the leak location was that the liner around that area was not tight against the wall. I knew the approximate height of the leak from where it seemed that the...

    Chlorine strength question

Quick question: I have some liquid chlorine that says "12.5% sodium hydrochlorate, 87.5% other ingredients, and 15% available chlorine". As far as the pool calculator, is this 12.5% or 15%? Thanks.

Finished vacuuming, now pump is stuck

Gave it about 1.5 turns with the screwdriver to loosen whatever was in there. Then if fired right up, multiple times. Thanks for the help!

Finished vacuuming, now pump is stuck

I did, but I bled the air out of the basket, so it's not a priming issue. The pump is not turning, so I'll try your other suggestion. Thanks!

Finished vacuuming, now pump is stuck

Hi all, Not sure what to do. I just finished vacuuming this morning. There was a lot of sand and dirt on the bottom (patio isn't done yet). I went to backwash and rinse, but when I flipped the pump off, changed the valve setting, and turned the pump back on, it just hummed/buzzed and doesn't...

    Green water, confused readings

Quick update: Yay, clear water and a happy wife! She says she's glad I listened to the forum experts rather than use the random "quick fix" chemicals she bought. Another BBB convert! So all in all, things are good! Still have some sand and dirt in the bottom to take care of, and have yet to...

    Green water, confused readings

Thought I'd give a quick update. Most importantly, my water is clearing. I could see the bottom, though the water is still green and cloudy. The sand filter is just taking a long time. My pressure gauge went out over the winter, otherwise I might try some DE in the filter to speed things...

    Green water, confused readings

Thanks for confirming, guys. Yes, the filter has been running 24/7, so I would have assumed it had gotten mixed well, but maybe I took it from a dead zone or maybe there is a layer or something. I adjusted the return jet to maybe help. The FC did drop this afternoon a bit, so maybe it was a...

    Green water, confused readings

    My bad. I have a TF-100 kit. Readings are: FC = 15 CC = 0.0 PH = 7.2 CH =50 TA = 75 CYA = betw. 20-30 Thanks for looking!

    Green water, confused readings

Hi all, Love this place. Thanks for all the info. I've read up numerous times since last year (or the year before?) and have a general handle (I think), but would like some help if possible. I've been shocking for the last couple of days, but the water hasn't turned grey and cloudy yet...

Do I need to worry about CH with a vinyl liner?

Do I need to worry about CH with a vinyl liner?

Hi everyone, Newbie to the forum and to owning a pool. I have a question on CH. I see in the Pool School under ABCs of Chemistry that CH doesn't matter for a vinyl pool, but then under the Recommended Levels thread, it recommends 50-300. My pool store gave me some "CH raiser" as part of the...
